“So, you might ask, “What’s the big deal? Why is poetry so important?” Poetry is essential for children because it is “the best words in the best order.” The rhythm and rhymes can help children develop a love a language—and a love of reading. Once kids begin flexing their writing muscles, poetry can spark their creativity and let their imaginations soar!” Sharing the Power of Poetry with Your Child, J. Patrick Lewis, PBS Parents
Michael Rothenberg, co-founder of 100,000 Poets (and friends) for Change, has created a special initiative this year, “Read a Poem to a Child.”
Readers have asked for suggestions: Toward that end, I’m putting out this call for your recommendations of children’s collections, specific poems or the poems you’ve written for children. I’ll create a post with everything to be shared here and on The Bezine blog and include a link to your website, blog or Amazon page. So, let us know your recommendations and give us your link in the comments section below. Thank you!
Don’t forget to join us at The BeZine for our virtual 100TPC, September 29th.
ABOUT
Poet and writer, I was once columnist and associate editor of a regional employment publication. Currently I run this site, The Poet by Day, an information hub for poets and writers. I am the managing editor of The BeZine published by The Bardo Group Beguines (originally The Bardo Group), a virtual arts collective I founded. I am a weekly contributor to Beguine Again, a site showcasing spiritual writers.
My work is featured in a variety of publications and on sites, including: Levure littéraure, Ramingo’s Porch, Vita Brevis Literature,Compass Rose, Connotation Press, The Bar None Group, Salamander Cove, Second Light, I Am Not a Silent Poet, Meta / Phor(e) /Play, and California Woman.
I found this website that I will put below for my son that really helped him be prepared for pre-k this year. He learned a lot of new skills, including how to read small sentences. I hope you try this for your children. kidsthatcare.car.blog

I would like to recommend a favorite of mine, which comes with a CD also. It is called, “Poetry Speaks to Children,” edited by Elise Paschen. It is a quality book and has lovely illustrations.

I have a poem I wrote a long time ago as a lover of Cats. It is a linked page to a site I had which still works but some links are not correct ie email. I’m trying to fix that but long story short …..Its called Pussy Cat.

ok here goes
PUSSY CAT
Pussy Cat
Pussy Cat,
I hear you meow,
There’s none but the silence,
None but us two.
Where were you roaming?
Where have you been?
I know you were prowling,
And what have you seen?
Your eyes are so huge,
The City is wide,
But one thing is sure,
You’ll stay by my side.
Pussy Cat
Pussy Cat,
I love you too,
We’ll someday be parted,
But our love is true.
Here you are sitting
A warm ball of fluff,
Your meaning is love,
Your presence enough…

I would love to do this; sadly, I have no children in my life at present. I must look into programs at my public library – my dad and sister have set the example. Will work on it!

I have many but this one holds a warm spot since I wrote it for my granddaughter (Katherine). She was a Macaroon Mary at the time.
