THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF POETRY has a rolling deadline and is now reading for its third volume of poetry from emerging and established poets.  Guidelines HERE.  Submissions HERE.

ALLEGRO POETRY, a quarterly magazine is open for submission for its twelfth issue. Deadline: January 31. Details HERE.

DRIFTWOOD PRESS “is devoted to finding fiction, poetry, graphic narrative, photography, craft essays, interviews, and other cross-genre work of the highest caliber.” Quarterly issues are released on the first Monday of every third month. The editors read all year round and there is a reading fee. Guidelines HERE. Submissions HERE.

SPLIT ROCK is an online lit mag established 2012 in Minnesota. “While we are proud of our Northwoods roots, SRR provides a venue for writers and artists of any background, in any stage of their careers, to showcase their best work. We seek poetry, creative non-fiction, fiction, book reviews, graphic narratives, comics, visual poetry, digital literature, and hybrid forms that explore place and the natural environment, though we welcome any work that presents a unique vision and aesthetic. OTAGO UNIVERSITY PRESS is an academic publisher in New Zealand publishing books on New Zealand and the Pacific with emphasis on history and natural history, biography (memoir), literature and the arts, and the Maori and Pacific. Submission guidelines HERE.

HAYMARKET BOOKS is a nonfiction publisher of “a wide range of progressive and radical political activists.”  Send proposal.  Details HERE. No poetry or fiction.

PULP LITERATURE seeks poetry and there is no reading fee for poetry.The editors are not accepting submissions of fiction right now. Details HERE.

GOBLIN FRUIT seeks “poetry that we can call ‘of the fantastical,’ poetry that treats mythic, surreal, fantasy and folkloric themes, or approaches other themes in a fantastical way.”  Pays on publication. Submissions through March 3.  Details HERE.

RYGA, a journal of provocations seeks work that explores social themes. The magazine is named for the distinguished Canadian writer George Ryga, which gives you an idea of the magazine’s mission. It is published twice yearly by Okanagan College. You may submit unpublished poetry, prose and short plays in line with their missions. Submission by mail.  Details HERE.

RUBARB MAGAZINE ” is an independent, secular, not-for-profit magazine for the general reading public, published three times a year featuring the writing and visual images of diversely defined Mennonites: genetic, practicing, lapsed, declined, resistant, wannabe, and friends of.

Rhubarb is looking for contemporary art and writing of excellence. Writing should be clear, stimulating and persuasive without being didactic. Rhubarb publishes poetry, drama, creative non-fiction and short fiction, and images of two and three-dimensional artwork. Rhubarb also publishes humour, interviews, book reviews, commentary and articles” Details HERE.

CECILE’S WRITERS where intercultural writers connect publishes fiction, plays, essays and memoir, and poetry.  Details HERE.

SPIRIT FIRST founded in 2008 to promote the practices of meditation, awareness and mindfulness is accepting submissions of poetry through January 31 for it’s 2017 contest, its eighth. Submissions by email or snail mail.Awards are $200, $150 and $100.  Details HERE.

WRITING FOR PEACE is accepting submissions nonfiction, fiction and poetry from youth between the ages of 13 and 19 years. The deadline is March 1st.  Details HERE.

A PUBLIC SPACE was founded in 2006 as an independent magazine of literature and culture. Editors read submission from September 15 – April 15. This is a market for poetry. Details HERE.

DAYS OF AWE AND WONDER March 10 and Saturday morning March 11, 2017, The Marcus J. Borg Foundation will celebrate a new collection of writings by Marcus Borg, Days of Awe and Wonder. The event will be at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Portland, Oregon where Marcus served as Canon Theologian. Guest lecturer is The Reverend Dr. Robin Meyers. (Borg was a theologian, a New Testament Scholar and a writer.) Details HERE.

GALLOWAY COMES TO GLASGOW: “Two accomplished, accessible and widely published poets from the wilds of Dumfries and Galloway will discuss and share readings on Solway seascapes, sheep, the Large Hadron Collider, the murder of Robert Burns, and other matters. LATE BREAKING NEWS: PEN Center USA Announces Nationwide Writers Resist on MLK’s Birthday, January 15

Writers Resist

PEN Center USA’s mission of defending freedom of expression is more important than ever. We want you to join us as we are shifting our Freedom to Write campaigns to sharply focus on domestic issues. We are excited to co-sponsor the LA event for Writers Resist with Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center. If you cannot attend the event we have listed other ways you can take action below.

Writers Resist is a national event on January 15, 2017, the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., when writers around the world will come together for a “re- inauguration” of our shared commitment to the spirit of compassion, equality, free speech, and the fundamental ideals of democracy.

Events are planned in NYC, Houston, Austin, New Orleans, Seattle, Spokane, Los Angeles, London, Zurich, Boston, Omaha, Kansas City, Jacksonville, Madison, Milwaukee, Bloomington, Baltimore, Oakland, Tallahassee, Newport, Santa Fe, Salt Lake, and Portland (Oregon AND Maine) and many other cities. LET US
For the Poets of January 15th and the Women of January 21st

Let us
take ourselves aboard a bus
and travel to the dispossessed
And let us praise their dreamless eyes and hardened smiles
with rogue words of truth
to the killing fields of their hopes
The slum wards and ragged towns and stolen farms
Let us take to them the carnival of our mad and scattered lives
Let us bring them the mountain, let us give them the vision
of an open window, an unlocked door, a bed to sleep in, a plate of food
Let us give them the keys to the house of our love
Let us bare our throats tattooed with roses, our breasts sequenced with diamonds
our loins hot with dragons, our hands and feet pierced with beauty
Let us come to their dusty squares and drinking holes with canticles of magnificent defeat
Let us deliver to their mangers
of pollution and penitentiaries, shopping malls and tenements
the hard beautiful birth of the heart
Let us bring renewal, let us declare the death of despondency and tyrants
For I have seen our campfires beside the roads, like fallen still-burning miraculous stars
I have seen our bus voyaging to innocence
I have seen us tossed this century like a bone
after decades of science and war reason and corporation
art and Auschwitz
I have seen my vocation descend like a pen to a page

WRITING PROMPT

Alan Kaufman’s poem is published here with his permission and in anticipation of the event featured in the poster above and initiated by Alan along with Michael Rothenberg.  In coordination with their event, the theme for the January 15 issue of The BeZine is “Resist.”

We invite submissions for the January issue.  This is the second writing prompt to help you toward participation – online and/or off – in  this important event designed to push back against vulgarity, bigotry, xenophobia and misogyny. For The BeZine we invite world-wide participation – not against any one person – but against the renewed growth of these trends all over the Western world and the continued entrenchment – business as usual – for the rest of the world.

For the Zine, you don’t have to write a poem. You can do an essay, feature article, creative nonfiction, art or photography, or music video, which we hope will not only frame the issues but have constructive suggestions toward resolution.  No hateful language please. When you have written something on “resist” and if you feel comfortable submitting it to be considered for publication, email it to bardogroup@gmail.com
