Preserving Sanity

FullSizeRender-3“You have to stop and freeze the moment,” he told me … “You have to make yourself remember by repeating it in your head over and over. You have to write to preserve your sanity.” Jenny Hubbard, “Paper Covers Rock”

Preserving my sanity today, putting the finishing touches on a short story that will ultimately be the second chapter of a book.  It’s raining and quiet and I wish I could just write the whole world into peace. xo

Would that it were possible to undo things done …

O God! O God! that it were possible
To undo things done; to call back yesterday
That Time could turn up his swift sandy glass,
To untell the days, and to redeem these hours.

— Thomas Heywood (1574?-1641), A Woman Killed with Kindness (Act 4, Sc. 6)

what remains as testimony

IMG_6885what remains as testimony are the
iceberg’s tip, the crisp of an autumn leaf
an ebbing tide, a few fading records, packed
waiting for the day, opened in repository
and sniffed at by the curious, seen as quaint
by those who weren’t there, who didn’t know
with what courage and sinuous grace we moved
through our trials, our victories, our passions
until we lost ourselves walking along the
roof’s edge, our eyes on another realm
we didn’t look back, only put out our hands
to shake yours as you passed us on your way
