CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS

THE TISHMAN REVIEW is a literary magazine that publishes four times a year with a current call for submission open for the October issue. Submissions of short stories, micro and flash fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, book reviews, craft essays and art are welcome. “The Tishman Review pays all of our text contributors, according to the genre. Poems are paid on a sliding scale between $10 and $25 per poem. Creative nonfiction and fiction is paid a minimum of $10.00 for a piece under 1000 words and for a piece over 1000 words at .01 cents per word. Craft talk articles are paid at .01 cents per word.  While we realize this is a small payment, our hope is (with continued support and growth) to be able to increase the amount we pay.” Deadline September 15 for October issue. Details HERE.

HAUNTED WATERS PRESS “is the annual literary journal of Haunted Waters Press. Featuring works of prose and poetry, the journal is released in both print and digital formats in the fall of each year. Described as ‘one of the most compelling and beautifully illustrated literary journals,’ From the Depths was created to showcase and celebrate the writing of new, emerging, and established authors. We offer contributors several paths to publication.” Reading periods vary. THE ARTIST UNLEASHED seeks feature articles to inspire writers and other artists. These should be based on your experience. Pay $0.015 AUD per word. Details HERE.

LITERARY MAMA, writing about the many faces of motherhood welcomes submissions that are “rooted and inspired by the experience of motherhood.” Themes change monthly. Literary Mama publishes blog posts, book reviews, columns, creative nonfiction and essays, fiction, literary reflections, poetry, photography and profiles and interviews. General guidelines are HERE. THE BeZINE submissions for the July 2017 issue – themed Prison Culture/Restorative Justice – should be in by July 10th latest.  Publication date is July 15th. Poetry, essays, fiction and creative nonfiction, art and photography, music (videos), and whatever lends itself to online presentation is welcome for consideration. Please check out a few issues first and the Intro./Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines. No demographic restrictions. We would encourage submissions from people who are involved one way or the other in the justice system and former youth “offenders.” Critique along with constructive suggestions or tested solutions and best practices are welcome. We do not publish anything that promotes hate or violence. Heads-up on August: The theme is Theatre. Deadline: August 10.

BLACK HEART MAGAZINE, We Heart Art will begin reviewing submissions in August for its anti-gun anthology. “In the wake of only our latest most-deadly shooting here in the U.S. – the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting that left 50 dead and more wounded – we feel it’s time to take action. No more “thoughts and prayers.” No more fuzzy sentiments. No more excuses. No more bullshit. We’re looking for stories to include in an Anti-Gun anthology, which will wholly benefit the Gun Control Lobby. SLICE magazine publishes fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Details HERE. It’s current reading period for issue #20 closes on August 1.

THE WALLACE STEVENS JOURNAL (John Hopkins University Press) “welcomes submissions on all aspects of Wallace Stevens’ poetry and life. Articles range from interpretive criticism of his poetry and essays to comparisons with other writers, from biographical and contextual studies to more theoretically informed reflections. Also welcome are previously unpublished primary or archival material and photographs, proposals for guest-edited special issues, as well as original Stevens-inspired artistic and creative works.”  Details HERE.

PLOUGHSHARES AT EMERSON COLLEGE Look-to series seeks essays about underappreciated or overlooked writers. “The Look2 essay should take stock of a writer’s entire oeuvre with the goal of bringing critical attention to the neglected writer and his or her relevance to a contemporary audience. Examples of such essays include Stewart O’Nan’s piece on Richard Yates, Joan Acocella on Sybille Bedford, Gore Vidal on Dawn Powell, and Ploughshares’ DeWitt Henry on Brian Moore. The writer can be living or dead and from anywhere in the world (if there are good English translations available). Essays should make note of biographical details that are pertinent to the writer’s work.” Look2 essay queries may be submitted between June 1, 2016 and January 15, 2017 and the guidelines are HERE.

HAUNTED WATERS PRESS annual Fiction and Poetry Open will close on the 30th. $10 reading fee. Grand prize is $250 and publication. Details HERE.

THE TISHMAN REVIEW 2017 Edna St. Vincent Millay Poetry Prize is open to poets worldwide. The call for submissions opens on October 1 and closes on November 15. $15 reading fee per submission. First place wins $500 and publication in the January 2018 issue of The Tishman Review. Second place wins $100 and Honorable Mention wins $50. Details HERE.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS CENTER FOR THE BOOK and UNO PRESS “is accepting previously unpublished submissions of book-length fiction, novels or short-story collections. The winning author will receive a $1000 dollar advance and a contract to publish with UNO Press. The selected manuscript will be promoted by The Publishing Laboratory at the University of New Orleans, an institute that seeks to bring innovative publicity and broad distribution to first-time authors. We read submissions from April 5th to August 15th. THE 2017 BARBARA MANDIGO KELLY PEACE POETRY AWARDS “is an annual serious of awards to encourage  poets to explore and illuminate positive visions of peace and the human spirit.” The three age categories: Adult, Youth 13-18, and Youth 12 and under. The contest is open to people worldwide. DRUE HEINZ LITERATURE PRIZE 2018 Call for submissions is open through June 30, 2017. This award is sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh. “The award is open to writers who have published a novel or a book-length collection of fiction with a reputable book publisher, or a minimum of three short stories or novellas in magazines or journals of national distribution. LEIF AND INGER SJOBERG AWARD to encourage translation of Scandinavian literature is open through June 15, deadline. $2,000 award is given “to the best English translation of poetry, fiction, drama or literary prose written by a Scandinavian author in Danish, Finish, Icelandic, Norwegian or Swedish after 1800.” Details HERE.

COLLATERAL, a journal “that explores the perspectives of those whose lives are touched indirectly by the realities of military service …. captures the ‘collateral’ impact of military service, whether it is from the perspective of the partner or chid; the parent or sibling; the friend or co-worker, the vegan, the refugee, or the protester”  This journal is affiliated with Washington State University, Tacoma and accepts submissions of prose, poetry and art year-round with occasional delays in response time due to academic schedule. THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF POETRY publishes twice a year and 50-100 poets are feature in each issue. There’s a $5 fee per submission and submissions may include up to six poems. Guidelines are HERE.

KILLER NASHVILLE’S BROKEN RIBBON “is an annual print literary journal for new and emerging literary and genre-themed voices and visual artists. Poems, short stories, and artwork can be any form, genre, or literary or art style. We seek short stories and poems that are raw, honest, gritty, from any world, any planet, any time period, any reality, or any dimension. We look for artwork that makes us pause. If it produces an emotion in us after we read it or see it, or you change our opinion on a hardline issue, you’re probably on the right track.”  Deadline is November 15. THE HITCHLIT REVIEW, A Secular Literary Arts Journal will release its inaugural issue in August. The plan for this journal is to be a biannual publication. It “seeks to showcase and celebrate openly secular artists, their works, and their communities” through fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and cover art. Submissions for that issue are closed. TOKEN MAGAZINE, which recently launched its first issue, “is a new bi-annual literature and arts print magazine. The name comes from the experience of tokenism that underrepresented groups often face. This includes people of colour, women, LGBT+, those with disabilities, and other minority groups. TOKEN Magazine is an outlet to work against that – we want to hear and see everyone’s stories, fictional or not.” Token is now accepting submissions for its second issue. The theme is “bodies.”  The magazine publishes fiction and nonfiction, artwork an photograph, and illustrations. Apparently no poetry or academic essays at this time. Details HERE.

AFRICAN WRITING ONLINE, many literatures, one voice welcomes submissions of poetry, essays, memoir, fiction with a  preference for new, unpublished work. “Our natural constituency of writers and material are African or Diasporan (please interpret boldly) but we will publish any writer who writes into the African Condition (please interpret boldly). We are adventurous in our definition of Africana, but we will also publish good literature generally.”  Submission guidelines HERE.

BITTER OLEANDER PRESS, A literary journal publishes poetry and short imaginative fiction. Details HERE.  

THE MATADOR REVIEW: An alternative art and literature magazine is now accepting submissions for the Fall 2017 publication. “We publish poetry, fiction, flash fiction, and creative non-fiction, inviting all unpublished literature written in the English language (and translations that are accompanied by the original text) as well as many forms of visual art. The call for submissions will end August 31.

“Our purpose is to promote ‘alternative work’ from both art and literature, and to encourage the new-wave of respect for online publications. In each issue, we offer a selection of work from both emerging and established artists, as well as exclusive interviews and book reviews from creators who are, above all else, provocative. For us, alternative is a way of voice and experience. It is the distinction from what is conventional, and it advocates for a progressive attitude.”

GFT PRESS, A Philanthropic Literary and Art Press has an open call for its 2017 GFT Press Chapbook Contest.  English language poetry manuscripts only. Deadline: July 31st. Details HERE.

THE BITTER OLEANDER PRESS CONTEST offers an award of $1000 and  publication of the winning manuscript. This contest is English and translations are not eligible. Entries “may be sent through the US Postal Service, but do not send it certified with a return-request receipt. Include a stamped self-addressed postcard for receipt notification purposes.” Online submissions will be allowed through Submittable format when the competition closes on June 15th, 2017. Details HERE.

SECOND LIGHT POETRY COMPETITION for Long and Short Poems by Women 2017 – Deadline Tuesday, August 15th JUDGE MYRA SCHNEIDER will read all entries. KILLER NASHVILLE  is hosting its twelfth annual writing conference, Killer Nashville International Writers’ Conference on August 24-27 in Nashville. $375 admission fee. This is a “forum for all genres incorporating mystery, thriller, and suspense.” Details HERE.

SECOND LIGHT NETWORK OF WOMEN POETS Festivals: Bookings open for AUTUMN FESTIVAL in mid-to-late August. THE PEEKING CAT publishes a magazine and annual anthology and offers editorial services. They are always open for submissions to the magazine but the deadline date for the 2017 anthology is August 31.  Appropriate material for consideration: poetry (all forms), nonfiction (up to 1,000 words), artwork and photography. HERMENEUTIC CHAOS LITERARY JOURNAL is published six times a year. “We welcome submissions by authors from diverse backgrounds and literary preferences. We admire all forms of experimental, hybrid and avant-garde literature, collaborative writings, visual and graphic outpourings – anything that literature is capable of. Our primary interest lies in works which inspire an active cathartic response, and not a sentimental passivity. PERMAFROST MAGAZINE, a publication of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks is “Located at 64° 50′ N (198 miles from the Arctic Circle), Permafrost Magazine is the farthest north literary journal for writing and the arts. We’re proud of Permafrost’s thirty-five years as interior Alaska’s foremost literary magazine . . .  Permafrost seeks original voices from all over the world.” The reading period for the print edition is May 1 – November 30.   • 2040AWARDS PROGRAM is open to minorities – “ethnic authors or those from an ethnic background over the age of 18” – and entries of translations and from the International Community are welcome as well. 2040 is seeks fiction, creative nonfiction, collections, essays.  The grand prize is $1,000. The runner-up award is $500.  There is a $25 reading fee. Details HERE. Deadline is July 7.
  • ELEANOR TAYLOR BLAND CRIME FICTION WRITERS OF COLOR AWARD for 2017 is accepting application through June 15, 2017 this annual awards $1,500 or the winner. Details HERE.
  • WUNDOR POETRY CONTEST, an inaugural contest, is themed “Spring” and the deadline is 31 May 2017. There are entrance fees.  There is no indication of a financial award but there is pubication for the winner.  Details HERE.
  • THE SECOND ANNUAL LOUISE MERIWETHER FIRST BOOK PRIZE is now through July 31 for works by women or nonbinary author of color. The award is $5,000 and publication by Feminist Press. Details HERE.

EVENTS

  • WRITING RESISTANCE: INVESTIGATING/SUBVERTING FORM & NARRATIVE, A Writing Worksop Series of Apogee Journal with the NY Writers Coalition and funding from the Brooklyn Arts Council. “Apogee editors and contributors will lead nine craft based writing and editing workshops. True to our mission of creating accessible and socially engaged programming, this workshop will be affordable, inclusive, and attentive to the ways identity informs reading and writing practices.” The cost is $25 per class. The series started in April.  Remaining classes are: Flash Fiction with Robert Lopez (May 17); What Song Told Me with Stacy Parker Le Melle (May 20); Radicalizing the Personal Essay or Narrative Poem with Lorde and Baldwin at the Helm with JP Howard (May 20).  Workshops are in Brooklyn, NY.   • SISTERS IN CRIME is a thirty-year-old professional association founded “to promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers. Today the Triangle area (North Carolina) hosts a thirty-year celebration – an Ice Cream Social – for writers, publishers an readers at Page-Walker House, Cary, North Carolina.  Admission is free; tickets for ice cream are $7 for Adults, $5 Ages 4 – 12; children 3 and under are free.
