Opportunity Knocks

ARIEL CHART, A Monthly Journal of Poetry and Short Fiction has an open call for submissions of poetry up to fifty lines and microfiction to 1,500 words. “No themes. No fee. DIAPHANOUS PRESS e-journal of literary and visual art has opened its 2018 call for submissions of poetry, fiction, and visual art. Must be previously unpublished. Details HERE.

FLASH FICTION MAGAZINE, Daily Flash Fiction Stories has an open call for submission, which are free or $30 for priority submissions “for those that desire in-depth feedback on their story.”  Stories length: 300-1,000 words. Submission details HERE.

GREEN LINDEN PRESS welcomes chapbook submission through March 20, 2018.  Reading fees, a portion of which along with book sales “support reforestation efforts.” Details HERE.

POETRY SALZBURG at the University of Salzburg publishes poems, translations, interviews, essays and reviews of recent collections of poetry. “Our intention is to publish the best available writing from a variety of writers.”  Submission guidelines HERE.  No unsolicited reviews.

RAG QUEEN PERIODICAL a femme-centric publication is “looking for tender, gritty, and biting writing. We want to feel unsettled in the name of change and awareness.” Submissions are open for “poetry, non-fiction prose, fiction prose from all genders and sexes as long as they advocate for women and femmes.” Simultaneous submissions permitted. THE BeZINE, Be Inspired, Be Creative, Be Peace, Be. Submissions for the March issue – themed Peace – closes on February 10 at 11:59 p.m. PST .

FLORIDA LOQUAT FESTIVAL is seeking “one-page poetry or prose submissions for a reading held at Frances Avenue Park in New Port Richey, Florida on March 24, 2018. We welcome all styles and forms as long as loquats are the subject or central image. Submissions are open to all writers and not restricted to professional poets … [Submissions are encourage] from anyone who wishes to participate. There will be a prize packages awarded to first ($100), second ($50), and third place ($25) in both the professional and non-professional category, which will also include a t-shirt and other small complimentary favors such as loquat jam. Accepted submissions will be invited to read at the event in beautiful Frances Avenue Park and will be published in the annual chapbook, Leaves of Loquat, which will be presented in the fall during a public event. Lastly, any time remaining after the reading will be open to the public for an open mic where all ages and levels of experience are welcomed and encouraged to participate. Writers can submit up to three poems. BLUE MESA REVIEW, A Literary Journal of the University of New Mexico general reading period runs through March 15 for fiction (up to 6,000 words), nonfiction (up to 6,000 words), poetry (up to three poems) and visual art. $5 fee for expedited review. $25 payment. Details HERE.

BLOOD IS THICKER: AN ANTHOLOGY OF TWISTED FAMILY TRADITIONS, an anthology to be published by The Canadians Authors Association and Iguana Books, is open or submission of fiction (3,000 – 7,5000) WORDS. The first line of the story must be: “It was February 29 again, and I was wondering which member of my family would try to kill me this time.” Canadian writers only. CAD $0.02 per word and a copy of the anthology. No entry fee. Deadline: February 28. Details HERE.

CUMBERLAND RIVER REVIEW is a publication of the department of English at Trevecca Nazarene University, in Nashville, Tennessee, which welcomes national and international writers and artists. Submissions of poetry, fiction, essays and nonfiction are accepted September through April. No submission fees. Details HERE.

DARKHOUSE BOOKS SANCTUARY “seeks poetry, flash, short fiction, and creative nonfiction reflecting the theme of sanctuary, refuge, shelter, or asylum, from the perspective of those offering, seeking, denying, or destroying it. From Bangladesh to the city animal shelter, all are welcome, as are all genres.” Submission period ends February 28 for this anthology. Payment is a percentage of royalties that is split among contributors. DARKHOUSE BOOKS Shhhh… Murder! seeks “cozy to cozy-noir stories [2,500 – 5,000 words] featuring libraries and librarians. Extra points will be shamelessly awarded to writers with personal ties to libraries. (There need not be a murder in the story.)”  Submission period ends February 28 for this anthology.  Payment is a percentage royalties that is split among contributors. Details HERE.

EASTERN IOWA REVIEW has an open call for submission to its ” annual issue highlighting the lyric [and hybrid] essay and prose poem.” Essays up to 3,000 words. Reading period closes on March 31. No submission fee but a $3.50 “tip jar” for speedy response. Details HERE.

GEOMETRY, An International Literary Review, is published twice a year in both digital and print presentation and has an open call for submissions of  literary fiction (to 8,000 words), nonfiction (to 8,000 words), graphic narrative, art and poetry (up to fifty lines).  Deadline is April 1. Contributors are “paid anywhere between $10-$50 for poetry and 1-3 cents per word for fiction and nonfiction. Contributors will also receive one free copy of the printed journal.” No submission fees. PRIVILEGE & IDENTITY ABROAD NARRATIVE WRITING CONTEST hosted by Entropy Magazine. The prompt for this contest is: “Describe a time when one of your privileges surfaced during your abroad experiences. In what moments did you hold power in these spaces? How and why did you realize your privilege in this instance and what did you do about it? CALIFRAGILE Poetry‘s editor, Wren Tuatha, says “in these times when the Earth and humanity seem so breakable, as if they might break each other, we search for answers in the air. COFFIN BELL, a journal of dark literature – a quarterly – is getting ready to publish its second issue, April 1, themed monsters.  The editors seek poetry, flash fiction, short stories, and creative nonfiction “that explore dark themes” not necessarily traditional horror. CONTESTS

NATIONAL POETRY SERIES open competition guidelines  seeks book-length poetry by U.S. citizens living in the States or abroad. Submission fee $30. Competition closes on February 28, 2018.  Details HERE. 

PAZ PRIZE FOR POETY awards one $2,000 prize every year – the even years – for “the publication of a previously unpublished book of poetry originally written in Spanish by an American resident. The 2018 prize will open on May 1 2018 and run though June 15, 2018.  Details HERE.

THE CAROLYN FORCHÉ PRIZE FOR HUMANITARIAN POETRY is $1,000 and publication. The prize “is awarded for a poem on the theme of improving people’s lives or reducing suffering, especially widespread suffering. Examples of humanitarian poetry include poems about refugees, humanitarian aid, escape, rescue, war and conflict.”  The  winner and ten finalists will be published in the upcoming 2018-2019 anthology, Elusions: Refugee Poems, to be published by WaterWood Press. THE 2018 INGRID JONKER PRIZE FOR ENGLISH POETRY has an open a call for submissions. Publishers or self-published poets are invited to submit three copies of any English poetry debut published in 2016 or 2017 for adjudication to:

The Ingrid Jonker Prize is awarded in alternate years to the best debut collections in English or Afrikaans.  The winner receives a cash prize dependant on the interest accumulated in an account originally established for this purpose.

In 2016 the Ingrid Jonker prize for a debut collection of poetry in English was awarded to Thabo Jijana for Failing Maths and My Other Crimes (uHlanga Press)

The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 31 January 2018. Entries should be accompanied by a cover letter with the contact details of the publisher and poet, as well as a declaration that the submission is the poet’s first collection of poetry published with an ISBN.

INTERIM: A JOURNAL OF POETRY & POETICS is open for submissions of poetry, hybrid, translations, essays and book reviews to be considered for its next issue. Deadline March 1. Nominal submission fees. Details HERE.

THE BeZINE, Be Inspired, Be Creative, Be Peace, Be. Submissions for the March issue – themed Peace – closes on February 10 at 11:59 p.m. PST .

Publication is March 15th. Poetry, essays, fiction and creative nonfiction, art and photography, music (videos or essays), and whatever lends itself to online presentation is welcome for consideration.  No demographic restrictions.

Please read at least one issue and the Intro/Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines. We DO NOT publish anything that promotes hate, divisiveness or violence or that is scornful or in any way dismissive of “other” peoples.

The BeZine will be published on quarterly schedule in 2018 and for the foreseeable future:

The BeZine is an entirely volunteer effort, a mission. It is not a paying market but neither does it charge submission or subscription fees.

Previously published work may be submitted if you hold the copyright. Submissions from beginning and emerging artists as well as pro are encouraged and we have a special interest in getting more submissions of short stores, feature articles, music videos and art.

THE MATADOR REVIEW, alternative art and literature, is now accepting submissions for the Spring 2018 publication. They publish poetry, fiction, flash fiction, and creative non-fiction, inviting all unpublished literature written in the English language (and translations that are accompanied by the original text) as well as many forms of visual art. It’s an online battle. The top 16 stories battle it out online complete with reader voting, author trash talk and lots of comments. THE [2019] SEVENTH ANNUAL GREAT AMERICAN FICTION CONTEST is hosted by the Saturday Evening Post. The winning story (between 1,500 – 5,000) words will be published in the January/February 2019 issue. VITA BREVIS LITERATURE / MONTHLY COMPETITION: There is no paywall or reading free. The editors simply ask that poets send in only one piece of their best work.   • Registration is now open for the 33rd British Council Literature Seminar. We are delighted that the renowned writer Professor Bernardine Evaristo MBE has agreed to chair the event once again. The seminar will take place at the Werkstatt der Kulturen, Wissmannstr. 32, 12049 Berlin, from Thursday, 25 January, to Saturday, 27 January 2018.
