Belated SUNDAY ANNOUNCEMENTS: Calls for Submissions, Contests, Events and Other News and Information

CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS

Opportunity Knocks

LUMINA LITERARY JOURNAL (Sarah Lawrence College) states that its mission “has always been to create a journal where the experimental and traditional are celebrated together, transforming into something innovative and exciting.” Submissions are open through November 5 for the next issue. The theme is “Resistance,” which the editors define as “resisting political powers, social norms, destructive impulses, negative influences, the desire to give up, or something else.” Prose, poetry and multimedia are of interest. Details HERE.

ELLIPSIS … LITERATURE AND ART is an annual publication sponsored by Westminster College and run by students. Poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, drama and art may be submitted for consideration. Publication is in April. Submission deadline is November 1 for everything but art.  Art submissions are open through February 1st. $10 per accepted poem. $50 for pose and cover art. Payment includes two copies.  Details HERE. 

EYE FLASH JOURNAL is another fledgling poetry publication. It is founded in England (south) and states a desire to showcase “the most striking contemporary poetry that will burn fresh images into the reader’s consciousness.” The first edition is schedule to come out in October and the plan is to publish two issues a year. They’re not on submittable yet so submission are by email. There’s not too much detail on their site but what there is can be found HERE.

ATEMISpoetry, the journal of Second Light Network of Women Poets deadline (reminder) for the November issue is coming up: August 31. They do not accept electronic submissions. If you have something ready and you live in London your submission might make the deadline. There’s also always the next issue that comes out in May 2018. Details HERE.

WALLOON WRITERS REVIEW “shares original creative writing and photography inspired by Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula …” The editors announce a call for their 2017 Volume 3 issue. 3,000 word limit and $5 submission fee “a portion of which is donated to area non profits that preserve the natural beauty of the region.”  Deadline: September 31, 2017. RIGGWELTER is a fledgling journal found this year by Manchester poet and playwright, Amy Kinsman. The first issue schedule to publish in September.  Submissions of poetry, short fiction, visual art and experimental media are welcome for consideration for future issues. Details HERE. riggwelter (verb) – a dialect word from the North of England. a sheep, having fallen onto its back, being unable to right itself is said to be riggweltered (e.g. bloody thing’s riggweltered again).

THE HAMILTON STONE REVIEW is a literary magazine published twice a year. Poetry submissions are currently open through September 17.  Details HERE.

FINGERS ON THE BUTTON “Is an ear movie, a podcast, a literary journal on tape? Let’s just call Fingers on the Button an audio Experience …” First season: early 2018. Opportunity for both voice actors and writers. Details for writers HERE.  Submission guidelines HERE.

POETS READING THE NEWS,  The World’s Only Newspaper Written by Poets is a digital publication “bridging poetry and journalism.”  Poems should be about a “time-sensitive news event.” Videos and audio submissions are encouraged. Submit via email. Details HERE.

The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a non-profit, non-partisan 501(c)3 organization based in Santa Barbara, California, hosts two peace contests each year:

  1. THE 2018 Barbara Mandingo Kelly Peace Poetry Awards ” is an annual series of awards to encourage poets to explore and illuminate positive visions of peace and the human spirit. The Poetry Awards include three age categories: Adult, Youth 13-18, and Youth 12 & Under. The deadline for entries was July 1, 2018. Entry fees. Cash awards.   2. The Swackhamer Disarmament Video Contest calls for contestants to submit short videos on an aspect of nuclear disarmament (the specific topic is announced on February 1 each year). The deadline for submissions is April 1. Details HERE

  • 100,000 Poets for Change (100TPC) events happening globally on September 30, 2017.   • A new and exciting issue of The BeZine is published every month on the 15th. Beginning January 2018, we’ll move to a quarterly publication schedule. Details to follow on this site as they are worked out.

BLUE EARTH REVIEW, MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO’S LITERARY MAGAZINE publishes a journal bi-annually, which includes poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and art. Submissions are read year-round. Details HERE.

THE MILLIONS “regularly publishes pieces from guest contributors.  The Millions also has several paid staff writers.  The number of staff writer spots is limited and we typically pull from our frequent guest contributors when adding new staff writers.” Details HERE.

PROLE “is a print magazine that publishes high quality, accessible poetry and prose. We aim to challenge, engage and entertain – but never exclude.” Submission guidelines HERE.

THE 2018 FILM AND VIDEO POETRY SYMPOSIUM is accepting “submissions of poetry films, filmpoems, digital-poetry, poetry video, Cin(E)-Poetry, spoken word films, videopoema, visual poetry, poetrinca, media poetry, and all films that are visually driven by text. Performance material, virtual reality projects, installation proposals, and video art presentations that hybrid or contain strong aspects of poetry are encouraged.

“The Film and Video Poetry Symposium also calls for experimental film and video work that explores language and/or literature whether it be oral, written, visual, or symbolic. This includes the film essay or cinematic essay, non-narrative work, and the avant guard. We will also strongly consider work that challenges traditional and current visual communication methods while continuing to function as a mode for exploring narrative and personal expression.” Further detail HERE.

JEWISH FICTION . NET is “currently the only English-language journal, in print or online devoted exclusively to publishing Jewish fiction.”  The zine is currently open to submission of literary short-fiction or excerpts from novels – longer than flash fiction but no longer than 6,000 words. THE FLORIDA REVIEW and AQUFIER: THE FLORIDA REVIEW ONLINE publishes work from the international community and welcomes emerging writers and those who are well established. The review is published semi-annually. The Aquifer is a new online supplement. Further details and submission guidelines are HERE.

THE BeZINE September issue is the prequel to our virtual 100,000 Poets for Change (100TCP) 2017 event on September 30. The submission deadline for the magazine is the 10th as always and then visit on the 30th to participate in the virtual event.

CONSEQUENCE MAGAZINE, an international literary magazine focusing on the culture of war “is now accepting submissions for a special anniversary issue devoted to women who write about war. CONSEQUENCE is an independent, non-profit literary magazine published annually. We publish short fiction, poetry, non-fiction, interviews, visual art, and reviews primarily focused on the culture of war.” Reading period ends on September 30. Details HERE.

THE BeZINE submissions for the August 2017 issue – themed Theatre –  closes at midnight PST on August 10th. Publication date is August 15th. DREAM QUEST ONE POETRY AND WRITING CONTEST Summer 2017 is open internationally.  There is a $10 USD entry fee for short stories and a $5 entry fee for poetry. Cash award. Details HERE.

Hello 100 Thousand Poets for Change!

There are only 60 days left until the 7th annual 100 Thousand Poets for Change global day scheduled for September 30! So far over 450 events in 100 countries are planned to take place.

This is an important year for all of us. The world needs our help, our voices, our words, our creativity, if we are going to get through these difficult times. We must continue to work together, as well as reach out to new friends in our cities and towns around the world to build a stronger, creative expression, an expression of peace, justice and sustainability. We must continue to organize and let our voices be heard. We need to keep pushing. Bringing our arts community together in this way is one of the most effective things we can do as poets and artists to bring about positive change, through education, awareness and community empowerment.

Let me know if you want to organize a poetry reading, music concert, dance performance, teaching workshop, fundraiser, or art exhibition in your town on September 30th (or any day close to that day that is possible). If you are going to organize an event in your city please email mrwalterblue@gmail.com and type the following statement to the Subject Line:

Quedan solamente 60 días para el 7o día global 100 Mil Poetas por el Cambio, ¡evento anual que este año está programado para el 30 de septiembre! Hasta el momento ya hay planeados 450 eventos en 100 países.

Este es un año importante para todos nosotros. El mundo necesita nuestra ayuda, nuestras voces, nuestras palabras, nuestra creatividad, si vamos a superar estos tiempos difíciles. Debemos continuar nuestro trabajo juntos, así como acercarnos a nuestros nuevos amigos en otras ciudades y pueblos alrededor del mundo, para edificar una más fuerte expresión creativa, una expresión de paz, justicia y sustentabilidad. Debemos seguir organizando y permitiendo que se escuchen nuestras voces.

Necesitamos empujar más. Unir nuestra comunidad artística de esta manera es una de las cosas más efectivas que podemos hacer como poetas y artistas para provocar un cambio positivo, a través de la educación, la concientización y el empoderamiento comunitarios.

THE STANZA POETRY COMPETITION (UK) “is open exclusively to Poetry Society members (if you’re not a member join here) and who are also members of a Poetry Society Stanza. The theme for the 2017 competition is WALLS. Send up to two poems, max 40 lines per poem (not including title). Free entry. 2018 FAR HORIZONS AWARD FOR POETRY (CA) is not yet accepting submission watch The Malahat Review for updates. This is for poets who have not yet published a collection. Prize is $1,000 (CAD).     between First and Second Avenues, East Village, 50% of proceeds will go to the ACLU, New York City branch (NYCLU), The Liberty Circus (Malcolm Holcombe, Alan Kaufman, RB Morris and Al Maginnes) plus special guests Chris Rael and the Church of Betty, Felice Rosser and her band FAITH, and poet Sam Sax are a rogue band of outlaw singer-songwriters and poets. They’ve thrown in to crisscross the land in a performing rolling thunder celebration of good old democratic open-heartedness and to raise funds for Immigrants and Refugees. 50% of all proceeds will go to the New York Chapter of the ACLU.   • Uche Nduka for receiving one of the 2017 New York Foundation for the Arts awards in poetry. Sageberry 1,Uche’s first book to be published in Nigeria in twenty years, was released recently. His Amazon page is HERE.
  • Silva Zanoyan Merjanian for raising $682.70 for Mer Doon Inc. from the proceeds of Rumor (Cold Water Press, 2015). Mer Doon is an organization that houses orphaned eighteen-year-old girls aging out of care. This support gives the girls a chance to become financially independent and safe from human traffickers. So far the sales of Rumor have also generated over $5,000 for charities. If you buy the book directly from Silva’s site (as opposed to Amazon), all proceeds go to these charities. Rumor won the 2015 Best Book Award in the poetry category from the NABE. Three poems from the book were nominated for the Pushcart Prize.  It is Silva’s second published collection.
