PRAIRIE SCHOONER, published in cooperation with the University of Nebraska Press and the Creative  University of Nebraska-Lincoln English Department, is open or submission through May 1. The magazine publishes short stories, poems, imaginative essays, reviews and creative nonfiction.  Details HERE.

PROFANE JOURNAL holds submission readings through July 31 for fiction, nonfiction, poetry and art. Details HERE.

BRILLIANT FLASH FICTION accepts submissions of 1,000 words or less. The publisher says, “Brilliant Flash Fiction is all about having fun. I’m looking for stories that are fun to read, and that are maybe even amazing. I think the best stories reveal
how much the author enjoyed writing them.” This publication also regularly sponsors contests, although there is nothing running now, keep an eye on the site if this interests you.  Details HERE.

BAOBAB PRESS seeks submissions of fiction from 3,000 – 5,000 words from emerging and established writers exploring the American West. Payment is copy and $100.  Deadline is March 31. Details HERE.

THE WRITER (Back in the late ’60s and early 70s, I cut my teeth on this venerable old magazine that was founded in 1887. I recommend it for reading as well as submissions.)) The “editors are interested in query letters on concrete topics written by emerging and experienced writers in all genres. PLOUGHSHARES EMERGING WRITERS CONTEST at Emerson University is open to writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry who have yet to publish or self-publish a book. The winner in each genre will be awarded $2,000. Read past winners of the contest here. Natalie Diaz is the poetry judge. You have to register to long in to the submission page. There is a $24 reading charge. The contest closes May 15, 2017 at noon EST. Details HERE.

PRAIRIES SCHOONER from May 1 through August 1, the publication hosts an annual Summer Creative Nonfiction Contest for work up to 5,000 words. There is an entry fee. Details HERE.

PROFANE JOURNAL 2017 submission for nonfiction and fiction prize competitions is open through July 31.  Details HERE.

FAN STORY – “The theme for this poetry contest is “faith”. We are looking for poems that in some way pertain to this theme. It doesn’t matter if it’s spiritual, political, intellectual or emotional as long as faith is clearly represented.”  Deadline: Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Details HERE. I didn’t register for this site but suspect there is a reading fee and/or submission fee and the business model is all about contests. The winner takes away a $100 cash prize. COLD CREEK REVIEW, a literary journal is a fledgling quarterly that accepts poetry, fiction, nonfiction and art.  “… we are partial to submissions that demonstrate examples of troubled emotions…We want your submission to leave us paralyzed and distressed. We challenge you to alarm us.”  This publication also plans to produce a special biannual – The Shallows – which does not share the same theme as the review. THE BeZINE, a publication of The Bardo Group Beguines, a virtual arts collective, is a digital publication that is published on the fifteenth of each month. The deadline is always  on the tenth. Submit via email to bardogroup@gmail.com.  Each issue is themed and the themes for each month are included in Submission Guidelines.  Please read the guidelines, one or two issues AND the Mission Statement before submitting. Special issues are April for interNational Poetry Month and September when we host a virtual 100,000 Poets for Change (100TPC) event for reader participation. This year 100TPC will be on September 30 and the September issue will post on the fifteenth as usual. The site was established in 2011 and the Zine is in publication now for three years. The theme for March 2017 is Science in Culture, Politics and Religion with a deadline upcoming on March 10. Submissions of poetry, essay, fiction and creative nonfiction, music videos, photography and art are welcome.

THE THIRD DUBLIN WRITERS CONFERENCE sponsored by The Society of Authors is scheduled to be held at The Gresham Hotel, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1 from the 23rd-25th of June 2017. ABOUT THE POET BY DAY

51kdxwtdml-_sx331_bo1204203200_The recommended read for this week is Elizabeth Bishop: A Miracle for Breakfast by Pulitzer Prize winning Megan Marshall who studied with Bishop at Harvard. This biography is richly spun,  energetic, engaging and even inspirational despite the breathtaking depth of Bishop’s losses, her sense of marginalization and her head-long push into alcoholism. Indeed, some of the inspiration comes because with all her loses, Bishop managed to hold poetry tight. Her poems were for her a charm “against the loneliness they often expressed.” The book covers Bishop’s relationships with other poets and her romantic interests, the last was for me the singular wearisome downside, much overrided though by the book’s pleasures and values. It is laced with Marshall’s own stories and together the lives of these two bare witness to the power of words to give shape, sense and meaning to life. We come away with a strong sense of Elizabeth Bishop, one of America’s most extraordinary poets. A page-turner. A must read or everyone who loves and writes poetry.

Join progressive activist JOAN BAEZ, Congresswoman ANNA ESHOO, State Senator JERRY HILL, Supervisor CAROLE GROOM and many other local leaders for a non-partisan, multigenerational gathering to affirm community values about:

On January 21 2017, the first day of Donald Trump’s Presidency, women-led marches, welcoming all participants, will take place across the world, with the largest expected in Washington D.C.. We call on people of all genders to gather in Hamilton as part of an international day of action in solidarity.

The purpose of this *non-violent*, *inclusive* and *intersectional* protest is to take a stand for and support women’s rights — the rights of ALL women — with women from all races, all religious communities, all political affiliations, cis or transgender and all sexual orientations. Violence, whether from or against the right-wing, left-wing, centre or independents, is not welcome and will not be condoned. We are unabashedly committed to intersectional feminism and inclusion.

We will gather, wherever we are, for the protection of our fundamental rights and for the safeguarding of freedoms threatened by recent political events. WINDHOVER JOURNAL, a publication of The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, publishes poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction “that considers Christian perspectives and engages spiritual themes. Submissions are currently being accepted. The reading period ends August 1. Details HERE.

JAZZ CIGARETTE is accepting submissions and says, “we don’t have a type, but traditional verse will have to be pretty good to land here. Send us your sestinas, though … Prose poems and hybrid work will also be considered.” Details HERE.

ISTHMUS is accepting submission for a special issues themed “Politics.”  Editors are reviewing poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction and seek works that speak “to our shared humanity through political engagement; works that bear witness, advocate, and foster authentic dialogue around current issues and events.” Deadline is August 1. BELO MIGUEL CIPRIANI, award-winning author, former Writer-in-Residence at Holy Names University, currently a columnist for the Bay Area Reporter, named “Best Disability Advocate” by the SF Weekly has published a call for submissions for Essays by the Disabled on Rites of Passage for a proposed collection.  Details HERE.

WRITERS DIGEST’S annual conference is upcoming August 12-14 at the New York Hilton Midtown. Details HERE.

ANAM CARA WRITER’S AND ARTIST’S RETREAT residencies to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. It is situated Eyeries in County Cork, Ireland, overlooking Coulagh Bay and the mountains and farmlands of the Beara Peninsula.

Anam Cara hosts weeklong workshop-based retreats. Upcoming: “Memory, Secrets, and Immortality: A Crucible for Creativity,” a retreat for women writers and visual artists by poet and nonfiction writer Ione from July 23 to July 29. Also “Lining Our Thoughts,” a poetry workshop taught by poet Leanne O’Sullivan,  from July 30 to August 6. Details HERE. (Honestly, it’s worth visiting the site just to check out the vids. The place is gorgeous.)

FILM PRODUCTION

CHAOS FILMS (HERE) announced that it has received grants from Conference on Material Claims Against Germany, The Yehoshua Rabinovich Foundation for the Arts and Rabbi Israel Miller Fund for Shoah Research, Documentation and Education toward the making of its film production, Living with Shadows.  This film will “unfold the stories of sexual abuse, subjugation and coercion of Jewish women and men during World War II. This aspect of WWII has largely remained a taboo subject in Israel and internationally. It has had until recently only limited or cursory treatment among scholars. Thus, the subject ends up marginalized in and mostly excluded from collective memory and public discourse about the Holocaust.

“Some women after the war felt they could not marry. Some who mentioned it were shunned. Others could not bear children as a result of the abuse. Most of the victims lived with shame about what happened to them and many avoided sexual relations. These are only some of the wounds, the shadows, these people lived with all of these years. When they arrived in Israel and were not accepted socially, they closed their mouths for decades. Only now, some survivors have begun to tell the stories as part of personal therapy.”

“Doing background research,” explains poet Michael Dickel, “we learned ‘The victims of modern armed conflict are far more likely to be civilians than soldiers. According to UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict, the vast majority of casualties in today’s wars are among civilians, mostly women and children. Women in particular can face devastating forms of sexual violence, which are sometimes deployed systematically to achieve military or political objectives.'” —UN Outreach Programme on the Rwanda Genocide and the United Nations http://bit.ly/29wiG6u
