THE BeZINE, Be Inspired, Be Creative, Be Peace, Be December issue – themed Spirituality (Spiritual Paradigms, Awakenings, Miracles)  is now open and the deadline is December 10th. NEW RULES: Please send text in the body of the email not as an attachment. Send submissions to me (Jamie) at bardogroup@gmail.com. Publication is December 15th. Poetry, essays, fiction and creative nonfiction, art and photography, music (videos or essays), and whatever lends itself to online presentation is welcome for consideration.  No demographic restrictions. Please read at least one issue and the Intro/Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines. We DO NOT publish anything that promotes hate, divisiveness or violence or that is scornful or in any way dismissive of “other” peoples.

The BeZine will go to a quarterly schedule in 2018:

  • March 2018 issue, Deadline February 10th. Theme: Peace.

The BeZine is an entirely volunteer effort, a mission. It is not a paying market but neither does it charge submission or subscription fees.

I do consider previously published work if you hold the copyright and I encourage submissions from beginning and emerging artists as well as pro. I am especially interested now in short stores, feature articles, music videos and art. / J.D.

THE COLUMBIA REVIEW, the oldest college literary magazine in the nation, will reopen for submissions in February. Does accepts submissions from poets, writers, and artists outside the University. Print and online publication twice yearly. Details HERE.

THE WAX PAPER (after the Studs Turkel radio show The Wax Museum) “a broadsheet publication open to all forms of written word, image, and collected conversation. The first priority of The Wax Paper is to expand our understanding of the people we share the world with, and in doing so, expand our understanding of ourselves. Pieces will be selected on their ability to illuminate the humanity and significance of the subjects that inhabit the work.” Submittable says “current reading period is open through June 30th.” Whether that means 2018 or 2017, I don’t know. I think she may have forgotten to update the page. Meanwhile, The Wax Paper IS currently open for submissions. Details HERE.

WHALE ROAD REVIEW accepts submissions of poetry and short prose in December. Open to submissions of reviews and pedagogy papers year-round. Details HERE.

VITA BREVIS

VITA BREVIS is a fledgling publication. The Vita Brevis teams tells me that readers of The Poet by Day are just the kind of prospective contributors the editors seek.

I am so taken by this graceful and peaceful new effort that in spite of their fledgling status I sent them some poetry, see Wabi Sabi (inspired by Leonard Koren, Wabi Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers) and One Lifetime After Another this coming Tuesday.

Introducing the new kid on our literary block:

“Ars longa, vita brevis” (art is long, life is short). This maxim so moved us that it seemed only right to title our literary magazine after it. It may seem curious that we chose Vita Brevis (life is short) as our title instead of Ars Longa (art is long). But this choice was more than appropriate; after all, the aim of our magazine is to publish work that shows a keen awareness of not only art’s beauty and immortality but life’s toils and finiteness. We want to revive and nourish the rich existential literature that forms when art and the human endeavor collide.

“Our team is small, young, and not one for the spotlight. Perhaps, you will never know us by name, but know that we will be reading and analyzing your work from our university dorms, fixated on bringing it to as many readers as possible–fixated on inspiring the second wave of existentialist literature. With that, we give all literary poets and writers our call-to-arms–send us your best work, and let us see what it can do!”

Give them some love: visit, read, “Like,” comment, submit work, promote, donate and encourage them. Theirs is a clean and clear effort with what promises to be well-curated poetry and art. They’re off to a fine start and with little noise about it and no self-aggrandizement.

  • Vita Brevis has an open call for submissions and clear guidelines. No deadline.
  • Vita Brevis is sponsoring a three-line (eighty word) writing contest. Again, the guidelines are clear. The deadline is December 10th.

SPECIAL REQUEST (deadline December 10, 2017): More and more magazines are charging submission fees and these are in some cases going up. The highest I encountered recently was $23 for the submission of one poem. Sometimes the publication pays writers and poets. Sometimes it doesn’t. This is not new, of course. Its been going on for some years now. It makes me wonder how much of a barrier that creates for writers. I’m collecting material on how you feel about these charges as a poet/writer and/or editor. Fair? Not fair? Okay depending on rate? Okay depending on whether or not they pay poets and writers? That sort of thing. I do plan to share the results of this informal survey at The Poet by Day. I won’t quote you by name without first getting your permission. BLUE EARTH REVIEW, MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY, MANKATO’S LITERARY MAGAZINE publishes a journal bi-annually, which includes poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and art. Submissions are read year-round. Details HERE.

THE MILLIONS “regularly publishes pieces from guest contributors.  The Millions also has several paid staff writers.  The number of staff writer spots is limited and we typically pull from our frequent guest contributors when adding new staff writers.” Details HERE.

PROLE “is a print magazine that publishes high quality, accessible poetry and prose. We aim to challenge, engage and entertain – but never exclude.” Submission guidelines HERE.

THE 2018 FILM AND VIDEO POETRY SYMPOSIUM is accepting “submissions of poetry films, filmpoems, digital-poetry, poetry video, Cin(E)-Poetry, spoken word films, videopoema, visual poetry, poetrinca, media poetry, and all films that are visually driven by text. Performance material, virtual reality projects, installation proposals, and video art presentations that hybrid or contain strong aspects of poetry are encouraged.

“The Film and Video Poetry Symposium also calls for experimental film and video work that explores language and/or literature whether it be oral, written, visual, or symbolic. This includes the film essay or cinematic essay, non-narrative work, and the avant guard. JEWISH FICTION . NET is “currently the only English-language journal, in print or online devoted exclusively to publishing Jewish fiction.”  The zine is currently open to submission of literary short-fiction or excerpts from novels – longer than flash fiction but no longer than 6,000 words. THE FLORIDA REVIEW and AQUFIER: THE FLORIDA REVIEW ONLINE publishes work from the international community and welcomes emerging writers and those who are well established. The review is published semi-annually. The Aquifer is a new online supplement. Further details and submission guidelines are HERE.

THE BeZINE September issue is the prequel to our virtual 100,000 Poets for Change (100TCP) 2017 event on September 30. THE BeZINE submissions for the August 2017 issue – themed Theatre –  closes at midnight PST on August 10th. Publication date is August 15th. Poetry, essays, fiction and creative nonfiction, art and photography, music and theatre (videos), and whatever lends itself to online presentation is welcome for consideration. Please check out a few issues first and the Intro./Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines. No demographic restrictions. We would especially encourage submissions from people who are involved one way or the other in theatre. Essays from theatre lovers on the impact of a specific show or the art in general on personal life or on culture in general are welcome, as is critique or historical perspective. Please keep in mind that we do not publish anything that promotes hate or violence. Special guest host is Richard Lingua, theatre aficionado, occasional actor and frequent lecturer. GRIS GRIS MAGAZINE, An Online Journal of Literature, Culture, and the Arts is at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. It is published twice a year and issues include poetry, fiction, nonfiction. $2 processing free on each submission, which are reviewed year round. Details HERE.

Opportunity Knocks

PITCH AMÉRICA, A Pitch Contest Focused on Latinx Voices opens at midnight on August 30 and closed at 11:59 on September 3. This contest is for the first 500 words and the 35 word pitch of completed manuscripts by Latinx. Demographic restrictions apply. Judges will selection pitches to make the rounds of publishers. DREAM QUEST ONE POETRY AND WRITING CONTEST Summer 2017 is open internationally.  There is a $10 USD entry fee for short stories and a $5 entry fee for poetry. Cash award. Details HERE.

THE WRITER MAGAZINE “Let There Be Light” contest calls for  2,000-word fictional short stories using any nuance, definition, or understanding of the word “light.” $25 entry fee. Cash award and publication. Deadline is midnight EST August 21. Details HERE.

Hello 100 Thousand Poets for Change!

There are only 60 days left until the 7th annual 100 Thousand Poets for Change global day scheduled for September 30! So far over 450 events in 100 countries are planned to take place.

This is an important year for all of us. The world needs our help, our voices, our words, our creativity, if we are going to get through these difficult times. We must continue to work together, as well as reach out to new friends in our cities and towns around the world to build a stronger, creative expression, an expression of peace, justice and sustainability. We must continue to organize and let our voices be heard. We need to keep pushing. Bringing our arts community together in this way is one of the most effective things we can do as poets and artists to bring about positive change, through education, awareness and community empowerment.

Let me know if you want to organize a poetry reading, music concert, dance performance, teaching workshop, fundraiser, or art exhibition in your town on September 30th (or any day close to that day that is possible). Quedan solamente 60 días para el 7o día global 100 Mil Poetas por el Cambio, ¡evento anual que este año está programado para el 30 de septiembre! Hasta el momento ya hay planeados 450 eventos en 100 países.

Este es un año importante para todos nosotros. El mundo necesita nuestra ayuda, nuestras voces, nuestras palabras, nuestra creatividad, si vamos a superar estos tiempos difíciles. Debemos continuar nuestro trabajo juntos, así como acercarnos a nuestros nuevos amigos en otras ciudades y pueblos alrededor del mundo, para edificar una más fuerte expresión creativa, una expresión de paz, justicia y sustentabilidad. Debemos seguir organizando y permitiendo que se escuchen nuestras voces.

Necesitamos empujar más. Unir nuestra comunidad artística de esta manera es una de las cosas más efectivas que podemos hacer como poetas y artistas para provocar un cambio positivo, a través de la educación, la concientización y el empoderamiento comunitarios.
