51kdxwtdml-_sx331_bo1204203200_The recommended read for this week is Elizabeth Bishop: A Miracle for Breakfast by Pulitzer Prize winning Megan Marshall who studied with Bishop at Harvard. This biography is richly spun,  energetic, engaging and even inspirational despite the breathtaking depth of Bishop’s losses, her sense of marginalization and her head-long push into alcoholism. Indeed, some of the inspiration comes because with all her loses, Bishop managed to hold poetry tight. Her poems were for her a charm “against the loneliness they often expressed.” The book covers Bishop’s relationships with other poets and her romantic interests, the last was for me the singular wearisome downside, much overrided though by the book’s pleasures and values. It is laced with Marshall’s own stories and together the lives of these two bare witness to the power of words to give shape, sense and meaning to life. We come away with a strong sense of Elizabeth Bishop, one of America’s most extraordinary poets. A page-turner. A must read or everyone who loves and writes poetry.

THE LUXEMBOURG ART PRIZE, an annual international competition aiming to discover talents, amateur or professional, regardless of age and nationality, seeks to accelerate the careers of unknown artists by providing them with professional art gallery space, first as part of a group exhibition showcasing the finalists for the Prize and then as a solo exhibition for the winner. To help the winner prepare and create a solo exhibition at the gallery, a grant of 25,000 euros (about 26,523 USD or 21,126 GBP or 26’623 CHF or 34,768 CAD or 2,976,000 JPY) is awarded by the gallery for the 2017 edition of the prize. ABOUT THE POET BY DAY

51u0fnastll-_sx309_bo1204203200_The recommended read for this week is Ted Kooser’s The Poetry Home Repair Manual: Practical Advice for Beginning Poets.  There’s so much I like about this manual.  For one thing, Ted assumes that if you are a heavy-duty reader, you already know quite a bit.  After all, one of the best ways to learn to write is to read. He operates on the moral principle that if you have a gift then you have the obligation to offer something by way of giving back. He says, “I hope I won’t exhaust your patience” and he doesn’t. He assumes that our ultimate goal is to reach others and to move them, so there is a great deal of emphasis on the relationship between the poet and her reader. He discusses our job as poet – not money, not fame – but “to serve the poems we write.”  This perspective makes reading and working with Ted Kooser’s The Poetry Home Repair Manual an refreshing guide to the poetic terrain for both budding and even some experienced writers interested in creating work that is fulfilling and truly artistic.

SECOND LIGHT NETWORK OF WOMEN POETS announces its Spring Festival The Other Side. “What is ‘the other side’? It certainly fascinates us – a locked door, a closed gate is an invitation to imagine the unknown, what might be… The ‘other side’ (right side) of our brains are the territory of intuition, creativity? What about life-experiences, viewpoints other than our own? Failures to understand ‘the other side’ are rampant, but writers may try to get inside another person’s skin?” Friday 19th and Saturday 20th, May. Details HERE.

Four workshops exploring the theme and our responses to it will be led by Caroline Price, Penelope Shuttle, Sarah Westcott and Dilys Wood (see information flyer for workshop information from tutors). Our traditional ‘Open Mic’ sessions, for women readers only but men are most welcome to join us, will take place from 5 to 6pm on both evenings, with Guest Poet readings from Maggie Butt, June Hall, Penelope Shuttle and Anne Stewart.

51ylkyldh7lThe recommended read for this week is Poems That Make Grown Men Cry: 100 Men on the Words That Move Them compiled by the father and son team, Anthony Holden and Ben Holden. I have to thank my good friend Linda F. for this recommendation. A moving book and a unique perspective. This is a poetry anthology in which 100 men from diverse backgrounds share the poems that they can’t read without being moved to tears and they tell us why.  The poems and poets feature span the centuries and the world. Definitely worthy of our time.

VALLUM CONTEMPORARY POETRY was founded in 2000 and is based in Montreal. The publisher says, “As one of Canada’s top poetry journals with an international focus, Vallum encourages dialogue between Quebec and the rest of Canada and allows Canadian artists to exchange ideas with acclaimed and emerging artists from the United States, Britain, Ireland, Australia, India and other countries around the world.”  The magazine is in hardcopy and digital. Poetry is accepted by snail mail only, no electronic submissions. Details HERE. 2017 SCIENCE FICTION POETRY CONTEST – hosted by the Science Fiction Poetry Association – opens on June 1 and the DEADLINE is August 31. “The 2017 SFPA speculative poetry contest is open to all poets, including non-SFPA-members. Prizes will be awarded for best poem in 3 categories: Dwarf (poems 1–10 lines [prose poems 0–100 words]); Short (11–49 lines [prose poems 101–499 words]); Long (50 lines and more [prose 500 words and up]). SPECULATIVE LITERATURE FOUNDATION $750 working Class Writers Grant ~ “Working class, blue-collar, poor, and homeless writers have been historically underrepresented in speculative fiction, due to financial barriers which have made it much harder for them to have access to the writing world. Such lack of access might include an inability to attend conventions, to purchase a computer, to buy books, to attend college or high school, to have the time to write (if, for example, you must work two jobs simply to pay rent and feed a family, or if you must spend all your waking hours job-hunting for months on end). The SLF would like to assist in finding more of these marginalized voices and bringing them into speculative fiction. Details HERE.

SPECULATIVE LITERATURE FOUNDATION $500 Diverse Writers and $500 Diverse Worlds Grants ~  “The SLF offers two new diversity-centered grants: Diverse Writers and Diverse Worlds, both intended to foster the creation of speculative fiction work rich in diversity.

“The $500 Diverse Writers grant is intended to support new and emerging writers from underrepresented and underprivileged groups, such as writers of color, women, queer writers, disabled writers, working-class writers, etc. — those whose marginalized identities may present additional obstacles in the writing / publishing process.
The $500 Diverse Worlds grant is intended for work that best presents a diverse world, regardless of the writer’s background.”  Details HERE.

THE SPECULATIVE LITERATURE FOUNDATION Older Writer Grants ~ “The SLF currently offers four grants: The Older Writers’ Grant, the Travel Grant, the Working Class Writers Grant, and the Diversity Grant. All of our grants are free to apply, and are designed as ‘gateway’ grants, with easy and straightforward applications that should be quick to complete. We hope that they will both serve the community directly, and also encourage genre writers to explore the wide variety of grants, awards, and residencies available in the larger writing community.

“This grant is awarded annually to a writer who is fifty years of age or older at the time of the grant application, and is intended to assist such writers who are just starting to work at a professional level. The SLF offers two $500 grants annually, to be used as each writer determines will best assist his or her work. We will be accepting applications for the grant starting in January.” Details HERE.
