REJECTED POETRY JOURNAL, poetry that doesn’t fit “is a place for those little lost poems that just don’t fit in. Poems that have been rejected a dozen times by even the worst lit mags. Poems that have been rejected by their crush. Poems that barely survived the editing process. Poems that didn’t get finished. Poems that not even the poet believes in. Poems will appear on RPJ intermittently.” This looks like a fledgling publication with a novel idea. It’s a blog type site – nothing wrong with that, by the way – and they’re using Tumblr. I don’t know how many people want to pub “Rejected Poetry” on their list of published poems. Link HERE.

OYSTER RIVER PAGES is preparing for its inaugural issues and invites submissions of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry and visual art through 31 May 2017. Guidelines HERE.

ICON, Kent State University “is a poetry and art magazine that is published once each years, near the end of the spring semester. Submissions welcome from everyone. Details HERE.

ROGUEPOETRY REVIEW, punks write poems publishes four themed issues a year.  The theme for the spring issue is “Revival.” DEADLINES: Spring: January 31, Summer: April 30, Fall: July 31, Winter: October 31. RYGA, a journal of provocations seeks work that explores social themes. The magazine is named for the distinguished Canadian writer George Ryga, which gives you an idea of the magazine’s mission. RUBARB MAGAZINE ” is an independent, secular, not-for-profit magazine for the general reading public, published three times a year featuring the writing and visual images of diversely defined Mennonites: genetic, practicing, lapsed, declined, resistant, wannabe, and friends of.

Rhubarb is looking for contemporary art and writing of excellence. Writing should be clear, stimulating and persuasive without being didactic. SWIMMING WITH ELEPHANTS is a nonprofit publisher based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, working with its local community and with authors nationwide. A primary focus is poetry and this publisher has a small line of chapbooks, poetry collections and anthologies, available through Amazon and one of their local bookstores.  Monthly beginning this month, Swimming With Elephants will feature a writer along with interview and samples of his or her work, all by way of helping to grow the writer’s audience. Explore the site HERE to see where your work and the publisher’s interests might intersect.

HERMENEUTIC CHAOS PRESS is largely a publisher of chapbooks – poetry, prose and hybrid. The current reading period ends on January 31. Submission guidelines HERE.

GUERNICA / a magazine of global art & politics was founded in 2004, staffed by volunteers, and supported by federal and private funding sources. It is a free online publication with contributors from all over the world and featuring essays, art, poetry (verse, prose poetry and hybrid) and fiction from emerging and established writers, poets and multimedia producers.  It is published twice monthly with quarterly special issues.  Take the time to check it out HERE as both reader and writer.

NO DEAR is a Brooklyn-based poetry journal that comes out each fall and spring, accompanied by issue release readings for the featured poets. THE BeZINE‘s January issue comes out on the 15th.  You still have two days (deadline end-of-day January 10) in which to submit work – poetry, essay, short fiction, music videos, art and photography on this month’s theme, which is “Resist.”  Details HERE.

JAMII PUBLISHING “seeks to foster the communion of writers by gifting books to authors who are out there shaking up the world . . .  we believe that poetry is not a solitary art. Poetry is an art form that brings people together.” Jamii forms a community in San Bernadino as well as a publishing house. It is open for literary submission until January 31.  Jamii offers detailed guidelines on submissions HERE. Read carefully. The focus now is women and minorities, non-academic.

MISTAKE HOUSE MAGAZINE “is committed to creative and intellectual refreshment in the form of poetry, fiction, and visual art.” Reading period ends on March 5th.  It “welcomes graduate and undergraduate writers from around the world, including work by previously unpublished writers”. DRAGON POET REVIEW is an eJournal that features poetry, flash fiction, short memoir, photograpy, art and reviews. It is published twice a year and the deadline for the summer issue is March 1. Submission guidelines HERE.

EVENTS

DODGE POETRY FESTIVAL 2017 will be held in October in Newark, New Jersey.  Exact dates are not posted yet. Watch the site if you have an interest in attending what is the largest and most exciting poetry festival in the U.S. Each year the Dodge Poetry Festival  reportedly attracts from 14,000 – 17,000 attendies. It was founded in 1985 and is funded by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. The website is HERE.

DRIFTWOOD PRESS, a quarterly literary magazine that is out of Florida, considers submission of fiction, poetry, photography, graphic narrative, literary criticism, and interviews. Details HERE.

GREAT WEATHER FOR MEDIA is still accepting submissions for consideration for its next annual anthology of poetry, flash fiction, short stories, dramatic monologues, and creative nonfiction. Deadline: January 15, 2017  Details HERE.

WEST TEXAS REVIEW is seeking submissions for its inaugural issue to include “poems, essays, flash fiction, and photographs that bring value to the page. We want work that is thoughtful, deliberate, and authentic. We want work that is concrete and direct, and can justify its own existence. Think of poets like William Carlos Williams, Anne Sexton, and Nikki Giovanni. Think of essayists like George Orwell. Think of short story writers like Donald Barthelme, Octavio Paz, and Jorge Luis Borges. We want your best work and, if you send us your best work, we will treat it with respect and care.” It apparently intends to accept submissions year-round but there’s no indication of the deadline for this first issue or the date of publication. THE BeZINE theme for January is Resist. We are piggy-backing on Michael Rothenberg’s and Alan Kaufman’s call to American poets to resist the incoming president. Our effort is not restricted to poetry or to the United States. We’re doing a global call for submissions that counter policies – no matter what country – which undermine equity, foster poverty, encourage elitism, hate and scapegoating … all those things that pit people against people, putting many people at risk of disease, homelessness, starvation and murder. The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement is Overcoming the Politics of Divsion and Fear by the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II

Some say he is this era’s Martin Luther King, Jr.  He believes in the dignity and worth of all people and the essential inter-relationship of all human beings. He stands for compassion, unity and social, environmental and economic justice.

In reading his views and about his work, I found myself moved to both hope and joy. This memoir is not simply an emotional or moral reaction. It’s a pragmatic plan for a more just and equitable country. I agree with Rev. Barber that our emerging leadership is encouraging scapegoating, a divide-and-conquer strategy that foments racial strife and economic inequality and the pitting of the 99% against one-another for the exclusive benefit of the 1%.

” … he laid the groundwork for a state-by-state movement that unites black, white, and brown, rich and poor, employed and unemployed, gay and straight, documented and undocumented, religious and secular.
