BLUE MESA REVIEW, A Literary Journal of the University of New Mexico general reading period runs through March 15 for fiction (up to 6,000 words), nonfiction (up to 6,000 words), poetry (up to three poems) and visual art. $5 fee for expedited review. $25 payment. Details HERE.

BLOOD IS THICKER: AN ANTHOLOGY OF TWISTED FAMILY TRADITIONS, an anthology to be published by The Canadians Authors Association and Iguana Books, is open or submission of fiction (3,000 – 7,5000) WORDS. The first line of the story must be: “It was February 29 again, and I was wondering which member of my family would try to kill me this time.” Canadian writers only. CAD $0.02 per word and a copy of the anthology. No entry fee. Deadline: February 28. Details HERE.

CUMBERLAND RIVER REVIEW is a publication of the department of English at Trevecca Nazarene University, in Nashville, Tennessee, which welcomes national and international writers and artists. Submissions of poetry, fiction, essays and nonfiction are accepted September through April. No submission fees. Details HERE.

DARKHOUSE BOOKS SANCTUARY “seeks poetry, flash, short fiction, and creative nonfiction reflecting the theme of sanctuary, refuge, shelter, or asylum, from the perspective of those offering, seeking, denying, or destroying it. From Bangladesh to the city animal shelter, all are welcome, as are all genres.” Submission period ends February 28 for this anthology. Payment is a percentage of royalties that is split among contributors. DARKHOUSE BOOKS Shhhh… Murder! seeks “cozy to cozy-noir stories [2,500 – 5,000 words] featuring libraries and librarians. Extra points will be shamelessly awarded to writers with personal ties to libraries. (There need not be a murder in the story.)”  Submission period ends February 28 for this anthology.  Payment is a percentage royalties that is split among contributors. Details HERE.

EASTERN IOWA REVIEW has an open call for submission to its ” annual issue highlighting the lyric [and hybrid] essay and prose poem.” Essays up to 3,000 words. Reading period closes on March 31. No submission fee but a $3.50 “tip jar” for speedy response. Details HERE.

GEOMETRY, An International Literary Review, is published twice a year in both digital and print presentation and has an open call for submissions of  literary fiction (to 8,000 words), nonfiction (to 8,000 words), graphic narrative, art and poetry (up to fifty lines).  Deadline is April 1. Contributors are “paid anywhere between $10-$50 for poetry and 1-3 cents per word for fiction and nonfiction. Contributors will also receive one free copy of the printed journal.” No submission fees. HAMILTON STONE REVIEW, an online literary magazine of Hamilton Stone Editions (press), is published twice yearly and is dedicated to featuring quality fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. Details HERE. (scroll down)

SUBPRIMAL ARTS is published three-times a year.  The editor currently has an open call for submissions that closes on February 15 for the March issue. PRIVILEGE & IDENTITY ABROAD NARRATIVE WRITING CONTEST hosted by Entropy Magazine. The prompt for this contest is: “Describe a time when one of your privileges surfaced during your abroad experiences. In what moments did you hold power in these spaces? How and why did you realize your privilege in this instance and what did you do about it? CONTESTS

NATIONAL POETRY SERIES open competition guidelines  seeks book-length poetry by U.S. citizens living in the States or abroad. Submission fee $30. Competition closes on February 28, 2018.  Details HERE. 

PAZ PRIZE FOR POETY awards one $2,000 prize every year – the even years – for “the publication of a previously unpublished book of poetry originally written in Spanish by an American resident. The 2018 prize will open on May 1 2018 and run though June 15, 2018.  Details HERE.

THE CAROLYN FORCHÉ PRIZE FOR HUMANITARIAN POETRY is $1,000 and publication. The prize “is awarded for a poem on the theme of improving people’s lives or reducing suffering, especially widespread suffering. Examples of humanitarian poetry include poems about refugees, humanitarian aid, escape, rescue, war and conflict.”  The  winner and ten finalists will be published in the upcoming 2018-2019 anthology, Elusions: Refugee Poems, to be published by WaterWood Press. THE 2018 INGRID JONKER PRIZE FOR ENGLISH POETRY has an open a call for submissions. Publishers or self-published poets are invited to submit three copies of any English poetry debut published in 2016 or 2017 for adjudication to:

The Ingrid Jonker Prize is awarded in alternate years to the best debut collections in English or Afrikaans.  The winner receives a cash prize dependant on the interest accumulated in an account originally established for this purpose.

In 2016 the Ingrid Jonker prize for a debut collection of poetry in English was awarded to Thabo Jijana for Failing Maths and My Other Crimes (uHlanga Press)

The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 31 January 2018. Entries should be accompanied by a cover letter with the contact details of the publisher and poet, as well as a declaration that the submission is the poet’s first collection of poetry published with an ISBN.

SPECIAL REQUEST (deadline today at 11:59 p.m. PST): More and more magazines are charging submission fees and these are in some cases going up. The highest I encountered recently was $23 for the submission of one poem. Sometimes the publication pays writers and poets. Sometimes it doesn’t. This is not new, of course. Its been going on for some years now. It makes me wonder how much of a barrier that creates for writers. I’m collecting material on how you feel about these charges as a poet/writer and/or editor. Fair? Not fair? Okay depending on rate? Okay depending on whether they pay poets and writers? That sort of thing. I do plan to share the results of this informal survey at The Poet by Day. I won’t quote you by name without first getting your permission. MAYDAY MAGAZINE art literature commentary publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction (including personal essays, critical articles, book reviews, and interviews), translations, and visual art. Details HERE.

NOCTUA REVIEW,  a publication of Southern Connecticut State University, publishes art, short fiction and poetry and is open or submission. Deadline: December 31, 2017. The General theme for 2018: instinct.  “General submissions should, but are not required to, adhere to the annual theme.” Details HERE.

THE SONDER REVIEW literary review and small press is open for submissions of short fiction, creative nonfiction and visual art for online and print publications. Details HERE.

SEQUESTRUM Literature and Art publishes short fiction (up to 8,000 words), nonfiction (up to 8,000 words), poetry (up to 35 lines) and visual arts by new and emerging talent as well as established. Deadline: December 15. Details HERE.

THE BeZINE, Be Inspired, Be Creative, Be Peace, Be December issue – themed Spirituality (Spiritual Paradigms, Awakenings, Miracles)  is now open and the deadline is December 10th. NEW RULES: Please send text in the body of the email not as an attachment. Send submissions to me (Jamie) at bardogroup@gmail.com. Publication is December 15th. Poetry, essays, fiction and creative nonfiction, art and photography, music (videos or essays), and whatever lends itself to online presentation is welcome for consideration.  No demographic restrictions. Please read at least one issue and the Intro/Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines. We DO NOT publish anything that promotes hate, divisiveness or violence or that is scornful or in any way dismissive of “other” peoples.

The BeZine is an entirely volunteer effort, a mission. It is not a paying market but neither does it charge submission or subscription fees.

Previously published work may be submitted if you hold the copyright. Submissions from beginning and emerging artists as well as pro are encouraged and we have a special interest in getting more submissions short stores, feature articles, music videos and art.

THE BOOKENDS REVIEW, an independent literary has a call for submissions of visual art or the cover of its upcoming Best of 2017 Anthology. Submissions of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry and mixed-media are welcome or consideration. Deadline: January 21, 2018. Details HERE.

THE FLEXIBLE PERSONA, a literary magazine, publishes print issues twice-a-year and semi-weekly “web flash” – fiction (1,200 – 6,500), poetry, and short essays on the craft of writing. $3 submission fee. Details HERE.

THE WAiF PROJECT (The Where Am i From Project) is “a not-for-profit online journal that publishes creatively written, true stories about moving around in today’s world, and bumping into other people.” The deadline for their inaugural issue is December 15. The theme is choice, as in choosing to migrate. “All forms of creative narrative are accepted — long form, short form, personal essay, graphic narrative (i.e. illustration, comic art), poetic prose, et cetera.”  Details HERE.

SEQUESTRUM 2018 EDITOR’S REPRINT AWARD is open for submissions for “reprints.” Cash awards $500 to writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. There will be a first-prize winner and “a minimum of two runners-up per genre.”  $15 entry fees.Deadline: April 30, 2018. Details HERE.

SONDER PRESS, “sister” to the above literary review, publishes fiction and narrative nonfiction. It hosts an annual chapbook contest that will close on November 30, 2018. Submission fee is $10 for manuscripts between 4,000 and 15,000 words. Details HERE.

  • UCLA, Department of Slavic, East European & Eurasian Languages and Cultures, Poetry & Music Night, March 7, 2018, 6 – 7:30 pm, 314 Royce Hall, 10745 Dickson Court, LA.An evening of poetry from Eastern and Central Europe with musical performances of great works by composers such as Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev to be performed by students from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music! This event is free and open to the public.
  • The Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWps) is a four day poetry festival in which 96 of the best female-identified poets in slam compete for the women’s slam championship. March 15th – 17th at multiple venues in Dallas. The top poets will go on to finals at Majestic Theater to compete for the title of The 2018 Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion. Details HERE.

  • REUBEN WOOLLEY (reuben woolley) who found I Am Not a Silent Poet Facebook group and magazine,a magazine for poetry and artwork protesting against abuse in any of its forms. The Facebook group is three years old and has 5,888 members. It’s grown quite a lot from the fifty original members. The magazine has received 143,548 views. Reuben’s newest collection is Broken Stories (2017, Vision Publishing).
