My mother’s crucifix.

Are you in the huts of the poor, consoling the
Broken-hearted with the sweetness of your soul, and
Filling their hands with your bounty?
A Lover’s Call, Khalil Gibran

this is no city of ultimate bliss,
the traffic is backed up to kingdom come

and the streets are a scrimmage, full and rough,
teeming with feral bits of hope and hunger

the people here are virtuous though,
ripe with love for one another, for Christ and music

hear the music winding, insinuating
and tumbling from la iglesia y las casas

the rents are morbidly obese, don’t you know?
though the wages and hours are skeletal

too often along B Street and downtown,
a man begs a cigarette, a woman begs for lunch

  1. The sad and dire human reality your compassionate heart summed up so devastatingly well in this poem, dear Jamie, is exactly what, fifty years ago, as a young adult, looking at the world and societies we have made, propelled me out of all Churches of any denomination, and right into Spirituality – this time consciously, for even since my childhood I had spontaneously never given any attention to all the divisive human dogmas, only to my sweet, fervent love for the Loving God I knew from personal inner experience. But when growing up and seeing what was actually going on everywhere among us human beings. I understood so well why the only other thing that Jesus had given us to do was this ‘Love one another as I have loved you’ : this was what really mattered, for only that could truly change us, change our way of seeing and treating each other, and so, change also our world for the better, here on Earth.
Twenty-one centuries after he said that, the situation hasn’t progressed much, if at all. But now we can all see it on a worldwide scale. Every organized religion can still rise above its human failures and do at last the real Loving it was intended to do by the Great Being who inspired it, but it will be thanks to the actual New Step in Evolution now happening on Earth, for nothing short of that could lift our Human Species out of its rut of Egoism and Despotism. The religions will have to stop being masks and masquerades or, to the other extreme of falsification, the heinous fanaticisms born of a mental exclusiveness which is quite the contrary of the real, Divine Truth in its all-inclusiveness: the Unity, not of Uniformity, but of Diversity..
This is what we are trying to give, through a spiritual process of Conscious Evolution, a first example of, here in Auroville, for Humanity as a whole – and this is why I am here, for I am in full agreement with what you have written.

    1. Thank you for your appreciation in spite of the length!… And I still should add that the question in the beautiful quote from Khalil Gibran is also answered positively here…
