mourning brooch, a poem

the memories have little substance
they flit and fly, pollen on the wind,
like the quick passing of a joyful birth,
the school years, the sweet trysts ~
a waving bridal veil . . .

. . . the way your love drained you of your dreams
just to fill yourself with him

. . . . . the epitaph of tears

only when yesterday becomes a story,
once upon a time, do memories
become memorial, a mourning brooch
forever warm upon your breast

Just a reminder activist poets and other artists and friends: it’s that time of year again . . .

“In the last few days over 20 groups have contacted us to sign up to organize an event for the 100 Thousand Poets for Change global celebration. I take this as a sign! It is time to put out the call! So far 150 events are confirmed for September 28. Will you organize a poetry event for peace, justice, sustainability in your town for this years 100 Thousand Poets for Change global action? Wow! Well done. For those who might not know or remember Rachel Dolezal is an American author, multimedia artist, former college instructor, and former NAACP chapter president known for claiming to be a black woman while being of European ancestry and having no verifiable African ancestry.

Jamal has been diagnosed with a severe form of Race Dysphoria, producing anxiety, even psychotic episodes, by desires to identify as a racial type other than the one assigned at birth. Since he was six, Jamal has felt like a white person, never eating collard greens or fried flounder sandwiches. His mother called him a “picky eater” though she sometimes worried it might be more than that. Jamal’s father was convinced he was gay since he showed no interest in sports except fencing which he watched on PBS® every Friday at nine. When his brother, Tyrone, played rap music, Jamal hid under blankets in a fetal position which his counselor said was a sure symptom of Oedipal conflict and regression to a pre-sexual stage. beach scene, a poem . . . and your next Wednesday Writing Prompt

 

the beach in San Francisco along Lincoln Highway near the Cliff House,

“…and then, I have nature and art and poetry, and if that is not enough, what is enough?” Vincent van Gogh

walking the beach
i discover i’ve mistaken
my bone for shell,
my blood for the tides

my naked footprints
are lost with the glyphs
left by leggy little plovers,
our messages wave-washed
into the bay and out to the deep

feet salted and sandy, hair damp,
as glaucous as sea spray, skin
warm caramel, akin to the sun
