BOABAB PRESS is currently considering Creative Non-Fiction, Short-Story, Novel, and Comic manuscripts. Comic manuscripts will not be considered without artwork. Poetry will re-open March 7th, 2018. Details HERE.

THE BROKEN CITY is currently accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, essays, comics, illustrations, photography, music/book reviews for its 2018 edition. Previously published work is acceptable. No prose exceeding 3,000 words. No submission fee. No payment. Deadline: June 1, 2018. Details HERE.

CONTRARY MAGAZINE, the journal of unpopular discontent is published on the South Side of Chicago and welcomes submissions of original fiction, poetry and commentary from writers anywhere in the world. No submission fee. $20 payment. Details HERE.

THE COSSACK REVIEW “accepts electronic submissions of new work all year. We respond within 60 days, usually much sooner. Work submitted will be considered for upcoming print and online issues.”  It has a rolling deadline. The review includes fiction, nonfiction, translation and poetry (3-6 poems in a single submission.) Details HERE.

RINKY DINK PRESS, micropoetry for the people: “poems delivered in a 2.75 x 4.25 format … so bigger than a credit card, but smaller than a postcard” that contains six pages.   The press is a “rotating collective of advanced creative writing students and established poets from the Phoenix area dedicated to promoting lyrical yet concise micropoetry, compact little messages with a punch.”   DETAILS HERE.   

SOUTH/85 is a semi-annual online literary journal of the Converse College Low-Residency MFA Program is accepting submission for consideration through May 1. This journal publishes fiction, non-fiction, poetry, reviews, and art by new, emerging, and well-established writers and artists. The editors say “we are especially interested in pieces that demonstrate a strong voice and/or a sense of place.” Details HERE.

THE NORMAL SCHOOL, a bi-annual online and print literary journal featuring nonfiction, fiction, poetry, criticism, journalism, author interviews, and multi-media texts. The editors like energetic and quirky and “work by historically under-represented and marginalized voices.”  The Normal School accepts submissions of creative nonfiction, fiction and poetry for consideration from through April 16 for the next edition. $3 submission fee. THE NOTTINGHAM REVIEW, an international short-story and flash fiction literary journal that has been online since fall of 2015 and will publish its first print edition this year. Fiction from 100-3,000. Nothing previously published. No submission fee unless you want an “expedited” (7-day response). Details HERE.

THE OFI PRESS MAGAZINE, International Poetry and Literature from Mexico City is open for submissions of previously unpublished  poetry, short stories, as well as non-fiction, interviews and reviews from diverse writers but are also interested in work from Latin American and Mexican writers. THREE DROPS FROM A CALDRON, poetry and fiction ~ myths, folklore, legends and fairy tales will open for submissions of poetry (1-6 poems) and fiction (up to 1,000 words) on 30th March 2018. Will consider reprints. No submission fees. Payment a possibility. Details HERE.

CREATIVE NONFICTION, True Stories, well told.  The theme is Intoxication and the editors say: “Seeking altered states might be one of the oldest human hobbies—for better and for worse—and we’re looking for stories that capture the widest possible range of experiences and voices. Whether you (or someone else) were tipsy or wasted, soooooooo drunk or just a little high—on life, or love, or power, or something else—we want to hear your story about being under the influence.” Must be previously unpublished. Cash award $1,000 for best essay and $500 for runner-up. $20 reading fee. Mail in submissions must be postmarked February 26. You can also submit online by 11:59 p.m. DETAILS HERE.

NARRATIVE Winter 2018 Story Contest  for short shorts, short stories, essays, memoirs, photo essays, graphic stories, all forms of literary nonfiction, and excerpts from longer works of both fiction and nonfiction. Cash awards: $2,500 for first prize, $1,000 for second prize, $500 for third prize, and $100 each for the ten finalists. Submission fee: $26 per entry. No previously published work.   • WORLD POETRY DAY,  Tuesday, March 21, 2018 celebrates and supports poets and poetry around the world.  It is an initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Details HERE.
  • StANZA 2017  (Scotland) is scheduled for 7-11 March, 2018. The themes are The Heights of Poetry and On the Road.  Details HERE.
  • POETRY NOW is a weekly four-minute radio series featuring poets who offer an acoustically rich and reflective look into a single poem. Produced in partnership by the Poetry Foundation and WFMT. Link HERE.

POETS AND OTHERS STAND AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE

At this writing, according to the Gun Violence Archive in 2018 there have been 6,975 incidents, 1,922 deaths, 3,330 injuries, 71 children killed or injured, 377 teens killed or injured, 32 mass shootings, 41 officers shot or killed, 312 subject or suspect killed, 235 home invasions, 192 defensive use of guns, and 229 unintentional shootings in the United States.

A World With Peace: A Place to Lament and Resist Gun Violence

100,000 Poets for Change Co-founder, Michael Rothenberg and The BeZine team member, Michael Dickel, have initiated a day for poets to gather wherever they are in the world to resist violence, especially gun violence, and raise awareness of the need for appropriate gun legislation in the United States and elsewhere. Beguine Again founder and another member of The BeZine core team, Terri Stewart, Guns Don’t Save People, Poets Do founder Evelyn Agusto and I support the effort and encourage you to organize events. To publicise your events post your event on the 100,000 Poets for Change Facebook Communication Page and on The BeZine 100TPC Facebook Discussion Page. I’ll do my best to catch all and post them to The Poet by Day Facebook Page and The Bardo Group Beguines (publisher of The BeZine) Facebook Page. Post to  Evelyn’s Facebook Page as well.  March 21 is also World  Poetry Day.

NATIONAL SCHOOL WALKOUT

Women’s March Youth EMPOWER is calling for students, teachers, school administrators, parents and allies to take part in a #NationalSchoolWalkout for 17 minutes at 10am across every time zone on March 14, 2018 to protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods. We need action. Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship.

Students and staff have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from the worry of being gunned down in their classrooms or on their way home from school.

Parents have the right to send their kids to school in the mornings and see them home alive at the end of the day.

We are not safe at school. We are not safe in our cities and towns. Congress must take meaningful action to keep us safe and pass federal gun reform legislation that address the public health crisis of gun violence. We want Congress to pay attention and take note: many of us will vote this November and many others will join in 2020.

I AM NOT A SILENT POET

HELP FOR AT-RISK POETS, WRITERS, ARTISTS

A Place for Freelance Writers and Artists, The Haven Foundation (created by Stephen King) “gives financial assistance to provide temporary support needed to safeguard and sustain the careers of established freelance artists, writers and other members of the arts and art production communities who have suffered disabilities or experienced a career-threatening illness, accident, natural disaster or personal catastrophe. Grants are awarded and renewed at the discretion of the Haven Foundation Board.” Details including eligibility guidelines and application are HERE.

The Authors League Fund (writers helping writers) has assisted professional writers and dramatists who find themselves in financial need because of medical or health-related problems, temporary loss of income, or other misfortune. Details HERE.

Human Rights Watch administers the Hellman/Hammett Grants program for writers who have been victims of political persecution or are in financial need.Hellman/Hammett grants typically range from $1,000 to a maximum of $10,000. In addition to providing much needed financial assistance, the Hellman/Hammett grants focus attention on repression of free speech and censorship by publicizing the persecution that the grant recipients endured. FELLOWSHIP

The Oxford American welcomes submissions for The Oxford American Jeff Baskin Writers Fellowship. Fellow will receive a $10,000 living stipend, housing, and an editorial apprenticeship with the Oxford American toward a nine-month residency in the thriving creative capital, Central Arkansas. COTTON XENOMORPH a relatively new “journal produced with the mission to showcase new and ecstatic art” focused on social justice. Its editors categorize it as a “no creeps” publication … that is, no xenophobes, sexist, fat-shamers and the like … much the spirit of The BeZine. Nice!  Although new, it’s clearly getting its groove on with a nice mix of poetry, fiction and visual arts are of interest. No submission charges. No payment. Copyright remains with the author. ECOTONE MAGAZINE, Reimaging Place, a publication of University of North Carolina Wilmington, is published twice a year and features prose and poetry. Submissions are open from August 15–September 5, and again from December 15–January 5. Mark your calendar. Details HERE.

This reading and mixer event presents Michael Dickel, the first 2018 resident for the 100 Thousand Poets for Change On Lake Jackson Residency Program-Tallahassee, FL.

Michael Dickel’s (Meta/Phor(3)/Play) poetry has won international awards and has been translated into several languages. His most recent books of poetry include Breakfast at the End of Capitalism (2017) and The Palm Reading after The Toad’s Garden (2016). He is co-editor of Voices Israel Volume 36 (2010), was managing editor for arc-23 and 24, and is a past-chair of the Israel Association of Writers in English. With producer / director David Fisher, he received an NEH documentary-film development grant. Michael Dickel lives in Jerusalem.

Kristine Snodgrass is the author of most recently Out of the World (Hysterical Books, 2016), Co-director of Anhinga Press, and a professor at FAMU. She loves collaborating and is always searching for new projects with artists and poets.

Terri Carrión was conceived in Venezuela and born in New York to a Galician mother and Cuban father. Her poetry, fiction, non-fiction, translations, and photography has appeared and disappeared in print and online. She is assistant editor and art designer for Bigbridge.org., and co-founder of the global grassroots movement 100 Thousand Poets for Change.

ONLINE POETRY COMMUNITIES

All Poetry dubs itself the largest poetry community, more than 500,000 poets. “Friendly advice and encouragement and detailed critiques when you’re ready. All Poetry hosts free contests with $50 cash prizes, active discussion forums, and an annual anthology to which you may contribute.” Free and optional paid monthly memberships are available. (I have not sampled this myself, but a friend has and reports a mostly positive experience. She was involved for several years.)

d’Verse Poets Pub “is a place for poets and writers to gather to celebrate poetry. We are many voices, but one song. Our goal is to celebrate; poets, verse & the difference it can make in the world. To discover poetry’s many facets and revel in it’s beauty, even when ugly at times.” This is a smaller and more intimate group than All Poetry (above) would appear to be. I can testify that there are some excellent poets participating and coaching one another. This is quite an ambitious project, long running and lead by a dedicated team.

CALLALOO,  a publication of John Hopkins University Press, “is the premier journal of literature, art, and culture of the African Diaspora, publishes original work by and about writers and visual artists of African descent worldwide,” welcomes submissions of fiction, poetry, critical articles, interviews, drama, and visual art.  This journal is published five times a year. The BeZine is an entirely volunteer effort, a mission. It is not a paying market but neither does it charge submission or subscription fees.

Previously published work may be submitted if you hold the copyright. Submissions from beginning and emerging artists as well as pro are encouraged and we have a special interest in getting more submissions of short stores, feature articles, music videos and art.

GLIMMER TRAIN PRESS INC. announced it’s upcoming New Writer Award of the year this week. Deadline: 2/28. Cash award for first place is $2,500 and publication. This is open to emerging writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000. Most submissions run 1,000 – 4,000 words, but stories as long as 12,000 words are fine. ARIEL CHART, A Monthly Journal of Poetry and Short Fiction has an open call for submissions of poetry up to fifty lines and microfiction to 1,500 words. “No themes. No fee. DIAPHANOUS PRESS e-journal of literary and visual art has opened its 2018 call for submissions of poetry, fiction, and visual art. Must be previously unpublished. Details HERE.

FLASH FICTION MAGAZINE, Daily Flash Fiction Stories has an open call for submission, which are free or $30 for priority submissions “for those that desire in-depth feedback on their story.”  Stories length: 300-1,000 words. Submission details HERE.

GREEN LINDEN PRESS welcomes chapbook submission through March 20, 2018.  Reading fees, a portion of which along with book sales “support reforestation efforts.” Details HERE.

POETRY SALZBURG at the University of Salzburg publishes poems, translations, interviews, essays and reviews of recent collections of poetry. “Our intention is to publish the best available writing from a variety of writers.”  Submission guidelines HERE.  No unsolicited reviews.

RAG QUEEN PERIODICAL a femme-centric publication is “looking for tender, gritty, and biting writing. We want to feel unsettled in the name of change and awareness.” Submissions are open for “poetry, non-fiction prose, fiction prose from all genders and sexes as long as they advocate for women and femmes.” Simultaneous submissions permitted. THE BeZINE, Be Inspired, Be Creative, Be Peace, Be. Submissions for the March issue – themed Peace – closes on February 10 at 11:59 p.m. PST .

New rules: Please send text in the body of the email not as an attachment. Send photographs or illustrations as attachments. No google docs or Dropbox or other such. No rich text. Send submissions to bardogroup@gmail.com.

Publication is March 15th. Poetry, essays, fiction and creative nonfiction, art and photography, music (videos or essays), and whatever lends itself to online presentation is welcome for consideration.  No demographic restrictions.

Please read at least one issue and the Intro/Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines. We DO NOT publish anything that promotes hate, divisiveness or violence or that is scornful or in any way dismissive of “other” peoples.

The BeZine will be published on quarterly schedule in 2018 and for the foreseeable future:

  • March 2018 issue, Deadline February 10th. Theme: Peace.
  • June 2018 issue, Deadline May 10th. Theme: Sustainability
  • September 2018 issue, Deadline August 10th, Theme: Human Rights/Social Justice
  • December 2018 issue, Deadline November 10th, Theme: A Life of the Spirit

The BeZine is an entirely volunteer effort, a mission. It is not a paying market but neither does it charge submission or subscription fees.

Previously published work may be submitted if you hold the copyright. Submissions from beginning and emerging artists as well as pro are encouraged and we have a special interest in getting more submissions of short stores, feature articles, music videos and art.

THE TISHMAN REVIEW, Beyond the End of the World, a quarterly journal of poetry, fiction, essays, visual art, and craft talk articles is a small nonprofit with a volunteer staff: reading fee (except during open submission period). Cash payment. Details HERE.

FLORIDA LOQUAT FESTIVAL is seeking “one-page poetry or prose submissions for a reading held at Frances Avenue Park in New Port Richey, Florida on March 24, 2018. We welcome all styles and forms as long as loquats are the subject or central image. Submissions are open to all writers and not restricted to professional poets … [Submissions are encourage] from anyone who wishes to participate. There will be a prize packages awarded to first ($100), second ($50), and third place ($25) in both the professional and non-professional category, which will also include a t-shirt and other small complimentary favors such as loquat jam. Accepted submissions will be invited to read at the event in beautiful Frances Avenue Park and will be published in the annual chapbook, Leaves of Loquat, which will be presented in the fall during a public event. Lastly, any time remaining after the reading will be open to the public for an open mic where all ages and levels of experience are welcomed and encouraged to participate. Writers can submit up to three poems. If making more than one submission, please send all materials in a single document. Include a brief cover letter/bio sharing your writing experience/publications, if any, to chengr@mail.usf.edu.
