AADUNA, An Online Adventure with Words and Images “seeks to uncover new and emerging creative visionaries, especially people of color, in the realm of fiction, poetry, non-fiction and the visual arts.”  Submissions for fall/winter are closed but are open for the spring issue through November 16. Detailed submission guidelines HERE.

AMERICAN SHORT FICTION reads short fiction year round and has a submission fee of $3. Details HERE.

THE ASIAN AMERICAN WRITERS’ WORKSHOP publishes two online magazines, The Margins and Open City. The Margins publishes poetry. AAWW’s Open City Muslim Communities Fellowship, Fall 28 closes on July 23. Submission details for all are HERE.

THE ASHLAND POETRY PRESS “considers queries from authors who have published multiple books and are ready to showcase their work in a volume of new and selected poems. Poets who are interested in publishing a new and selected volume should first write and include a list of previous published works prior to sending a full-length manuscript.”

BLACK WARRIOR REVIEW (University of Alabama) is currently reading fiction, nonfiction and poetry through September 1, 2018. This publication is also interested in graphic writing, art and comics. Details HERE.

CATAPULT, launching remarkable wring, publishes narrative fiction and nonfiction books and a magazine, offers classes, and hosts an online community where you can post some of your work. Details HERE.

SOFT SKULL PRESS reads book-length manuscripts of literary fiction under 50,000 words in April (mark your calendar). Submission period for nonfiction proposals opens on October 1.   Watch the site for detailed announcements.

FRONTIER POETRY is a “quality home” for new and emerging poets with no more than one full-length published work. Details HERE.

THE HUNGER JOURNAL publishes fiction, poetry, nonfiction, hybrid/experimental, art/photograph is open for submissions through August 15 for its Fall Issue. The Journal’s theme “is not confined only to food, but hungers and thirsts of all kinds: the craving for connection, the human need to be filled or emptied, the devastating desires that define our most alive moments. Hungers can be sexual, romantic, familial, individualistic, spiritual, creative, sorrowful, conflicted, humanistic, and/or existential.” Each issue also features The Glutton’s Digest, which is “dedicated to filling the emptiness.” Submissions by email.  No submission fee. THE MATADOR REVIEW is open or submissions to its Fall 2018 issue. The editors seek poetry, fiction, flash fiction, and creative non-fiction, inviting all unpublished literature written in the English language (and translations that are accompanied by the original text) as well as many forms of visual art.   • Words Without Borders (WWB) has been named a winner of the inaugural Whiting Literary Magazine Prizes, the Whiting Foundation announced today. The prizes recognize three magazines for their superb publishing, advocacy of writers, and importance to the literary community.
  • The poet Donald Hall recently passed away. HERE is an interview – A Poet’s View … – from NPR’s special series on poetry. It was done in 2012.

ABOUT

Poet and writer, I was once columnist and associate editor of a regional employment publication. I currently run this site, The Poet by Day, an information hub for poets and writers. I am the managing editor of The BeZine published by The Bardo Group Beguines (originally The Bardo Group), a virtual arts collective I founded.  I am a weekly contributor to Beguine Again, a site showcasing spiritual writers. My work is featured in a variety of publications and on sites, including: Levure littéraure, Ramingo’s Porch, Vita Brevis Literature,Compass Rose, Connotation Press, The Bar None Group, Salamander Cove, Second Light, I Am Not a Silent Poet, Meta / Phor(e) /Play, and California Woman. My poetry was recently read by Northern California actor Richard Lingua for Poetry Woodshed, Belfast Community Radio. I was featured in a lengthy interview on the Creative Nexus Radio Show where I was dubbed “Poetry Champion.”

3:AM MAGAZINE, Whatever it is, We’re Against It publishes criticsim (query first), fiction (closed) and nonfiction (query first) and poetry. Currently submissions are open for poetry only for its Duos (collaborative poems) and Poem Brut (explores handwriting, abstraction, illustration, asemic and pansemic writing, visual poetry and so on) series. No submission fees. No payment. Details HERE.

ABLE MUSE, A Review of Poetry, Prose & Art invites submissions for poetry (mainly metrical) poetry translation, fiction (up to 4,000 words), art and photography, nonfiction, essays, book reviews and interviews. No fee. Details HERE.

ACTA VICTORIANA, the literary journal of Victoria University in the University of Toronto, publishes prose and poetry once a year. Details HERE.

BLACK WARRIOR REVIEW of University of Alabama is reading general fiction, nonfiction and poetry submissions and review graphic writing, comics and art through September 1. $3 submission fee.  The editors “especially strive to magnify voices that are traditionally and systemically silenced. Writers of color, queer and trans writers, disabled writers, immigrant writers, fat writers and femmes: you are welcome and wanted here.” Details HERE.

BROKENPENCIL, The Magazine of Zine Culture and the Independent Arts publishes “sort reports (about 400 words) on cultural events, personalities, zine gatherings” as well as feature articles (1,000-3,000 words) on indie/alternative culture,  art, fiction (up to 3,000 through September 15th).  The next pitch deadline is July 15th. Optional submission fee. Payment: $50 – $100 dollars. Details HERE.

CONJUNCTIONS, Read Dangerously (biannual – usually themed – print/e-book) is open for Conjunctions: 71, A Cabinet of Curiosity (Fall/November 2018). No deadline is offered. The editor also reads year-round for the weekly online magazine. Interest is in short-and-long-form fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. No fee. Details HERE.

GRAIN MAGAZINE, the journal of eclectic writing will open for submissions of poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction and other material on September 1, 2018 and close on May 31, 2019. Canadian and international writers invited. Payment $50 per page with a max payment of $250. Compensation includes three contributor copies. Details HERE.

GREENSBORO REVIEW is open through September 15 for submissions of poetry and fiction. Submission fee. Details HERE.

IRON HORSE LITERARY REVIEW publishes “one issue as a chapbook. The genre rotates: prose collections in odd years; poetry collections in even years. Prose collections should be 40-56 pages, double-spaced; poetry collections should be 28-36 pages, one poem per page. Submissions due every year from January through mid-March. Fee: $18, which includes year’s subscription. Winner receives $1,000 and press run of 500. Watch the site for 2019 call for submissions.  ihlr trifecta: Send marathon-long manuscripts every October. video literature: Submit every year from January through mid-March.

JUBILAT of the Unviersity of Massachusettes at Amherst publishes poetry and art, and other forms of writing on poetry, poetics or subjects that have nothing to do with poetry. “All art submissions must either be in black and white or publishable in grayscale.”  Calls will open on September 1. THE BeZINE, Be Inspired, Be Creative, Be Peace, Be. Submissions for the September issue – themed Social Justice – close on August 10 at 11:59 p.m. PDT .

Please send text in the body of the email not as an attachment. Send photographs or illustrations as attachments. No google docs or Dropbox or other such. No rich text. Send submissions to bardogroup@gmail.com.

Publication is September 15th. Poetry, essays, fiction and creative nonfiction, art and photography, music (videos or essays), and whatever lends itself to online presentation is welcome for consideration.

No demographic restrictions.

Please read at least one issue and the Intro/Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines. We DO NOT publish anything that promotes hate, divisiveness or violence or that is scornful or in any way dismissive of “other” peoples.

The BeZine is an entirely volunteer effort, a mission. It is not a paying market but neither does it charge submission or subscription fees.

Previously published work may be submitted IF you hold the copyright. Submissions from beginning and emerging artists as well as pro are encouraged and we have a special interest in getting more submissions of short stores, feature articles, music videos and art for consideration.

BLACK WARRIOR REVIEW of the University of Alabama has an open call for entries to its 2018 CONTEST, which will close on September 1. $1000 & PUBLICATION in Nonfiction, Fiction, and Poetry; $500 & PUBLICATION in our Flash Category; Nonfiction Judge: Kate Zambreno; Fiction Judge: Laura van den Berg; Poetry Judge: Vanessa Angélica Villarreal; Flash Judge: Jennifer S. Cheng. Entry fees: Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry: there is a $20 entry fee for each submission ($30 for international submissions). SECOND LIGHT POETRY COMPETITION FOR LONG AND SHORT POEMS BY WOMEN – 2018 – NOW OPEN JUDGE ESTHER MORGAN. Poet, tutor and editor, Esther Morgan’s first collection Beyond Calling Distance (2001), which won the Aldeburgh ‘best first collection’ Prize, was followed by The Silence Living in Houses (2005), Grace (2011) and The Wound Register (2018), all by Bloodaxe. She won the Bridport Prize in 2010.

  • £300 First Prize for each of Long (no upper limit) and Short (max 50 lines) poems
  • £150 Second Prize (1 poem from either category)
  • £75 Third Prize (1 poem from either category)

  • nothing violent or encouraging of violence
  • English only, though Spanish is okay if accompanied by translation
