MAYDAY MAGAZINE art literature commentary publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction (including personal essays, critical articles, book reviews, and interviews), translations, and visual art. Details HERE.

NOCTUA REVIEW,  a publication of Southern Connecticut State University, publishes art, short fiction and poetry and is open or submission. Deadline: December 31, 2017. The General theme for 2018: instinct.  “General submissions should, but are not required to, adhere to the annual theme.” Details HERE.

THE SONDER REVIEW literary review and small press is open for submissions of short fiction, creative nonfiction and visual art for online and print publications. Details HERE.

SEQUESTRUM Literature and Art publishes short fiction (up to 8,000 words), nonfiction (up to 8,000 words), poetry (up to 35 lines) and visual arts by new and emerging talent as well as established. Deadline: December 15. Details HERE.

THE BeZINE, Be Inspired, Be Creative, Be Peace, Be December issue – themed Spirituality (Spiritual Paradigms, Awakenings, Miracles)  is now open and the deadline is December 10th. NEW RULES: Please send text in the body of the email not as an attachment. Send submissions to me (Jamie) at bardogroup@gmail.com. Publication is December 15th. Poetry, essays, fiction and creative nonfiction, art and photography, music (videos or essays), and whatever lends itself to online presentation is welcome for consideration.  No demographic restrictions. Please read at least one issue and the Intro/Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines. We DO NOT publish anything that promotes hate, divisiveness or violence or that is scornful or in any way dismissive of “other” peoples.

The BeZine is an entirely volunteer effort, a mission. It is not a paying market but neither does it charge submission or subscription fees.

Previously published work may be submitted if you hold the copyright. Submissions from beginning and emerging artists as well as pro are encouraged and we have a special interest in getting more submissions short stores, feature articles, music videos and art.

THE BOOKENDS REVIEW, an independent literary has a call for submissions of visual art or the cover of its upcoming Best of 2017 Anthology. Submissions of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry and mixed-media are welcome or consideration. Deadline: January 21, 2018. Details HERE.

THE FLEXIBLE PERSONA, a literary magazine, publishes print issues twice-a-year and semi-weekly “web flash” – fiction (1,200 – 6,500), poetry, and short essays on the craft of writing. $3 submission fee. Details HERE.

THE WAiF PROJECT (The Where Am i From Project) is “a not-for-profit online journal that publishes creatively written, true stories about moving around in today’s world, and bumping into other people.” The deadline for their inaugural issue is December 15. The theme is choice, as in choosing to migrate. “All forms of creative narrative are accepted — long form, short form, personal essay, graphic narrative (i.e. illustration, comic art), poetic prose, et cetera.”  Details HERE.

SEQUESTRUM 2018 EDITOR’S REPRINT AWARD is open for submissions for “reprints.” Cash awards $500 to writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. There will be a first-prize winner and “a minimum of two runners-up per genre.”  $15 entry fees.Deadline: April 30, 2018. Details HERE.

SONDER PRESS, “sister” to the above literary review, publishes fiction and narrative nonfiction. It hosts an annual chapbook contest that will close on November 30, 2018. Submission fee is $10 for manuscripts between 4,000 and 15,000 words. Details HERE.

THE NEW AMERICAN PRESS 2018 New American Poetry Prize is open for submissions. The deadline is January 15, 2018. Details HERE.

THE SOUTHERN REVIEW accepts unsolicited poetry through February 1st. $3 service charge for online submissions. Payment is $25 per page with a max of $200 and copies. Details HERE.

  • TONIGHT: The Academy of American Poets in New York City and Berkeley Books of Paris host Jennifer K. Dick, the last in their fall series on American poets in Paris. Ms. Dick’s reading will take place at 7:30 pm tonight at Berkeley Books (8, rue Casimir Delavigne in Paris, France 75006).

  • UCLA, Department of Slavic, East European & Eurasian Languages and Cultures, Poetry & Music Night, March 7, 2018, 6 – 7:30 pm, 314 Royce Hall, 10745 Dickson Court, LA.An evening of poetry from Eastern and Central Europe with musical performances of great works by composers such as Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev to be performed by students from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music! This event is free and open to the public.
  • The Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWps) is a four day poetry festival in which 96 of the best female-identified poets in slam compete for the women’s slam championship. March 15th – 17th at multiple venues in Dallas. The top poets will go on to finals at Majestic Theater to compete for the title of The 2018 Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion. Details HERE.

  • DON BEUKES (The Salamander Chronicles) and Alien Buddha Press on the publication of Volume 1 of Don’s Icarus Rising, a collection of ekphrasic poems and the art works that inspired them.
  • REUBEN WOOLLEY (reuben woolley) who found I Am Not a Silent Poet Facebook group and magazine,a magazine for poetry and artwork protesting against abuse in any of its forms. The Facebook group is three years old and has 5,888 members. It’s grown quite a lot from the fifty original members. The magazine has received 143,548 views. Reuben’s newest collection is Broken Stories (2017, Vision Publishing).

SPECIAL REQUEST (deadline December 10, 2017): More and more magazines are charging submission fees and these are in some cases going up. The highest I encountered recently was $23 for the submission of one poem. Sometimes the publication pays writers and poets. Sometimes it doesn’t. This is not new, of course. Its been going on for some years now. It makes me wonder how much of a barrier that creates for writers. I’m collecting material on how you feel about these charges as a poet/writer and/or editor. Fair? Not fair? Okay depending on rate? Okay depending on whether they pay poets and writers? That sort of thing. I do plan to share the results of this informal survey at The Poet by Day. I won’t quote you by name without first getting your permission. THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF POETRY publishes from 100-150 poets in each of its biannual editions. The editors are screening submissions for their fourth edition and are open to emerging and established poets and long poems and simultaneous submissions. $5 submission free for up to six poems. LUXINE, We live off your creative impulses is a publication created by two students in Edinburgh who feature the work of students.  Themes are color based and for issue five, the color is nude.  Featured: art, articles, interviews and poems. Deadline: 25 October 2017. Details HERE.

HOWL, Where Writers Go to Read accepts submissions of fiction, non-fiction, graphic narratives, poetry, art, and drama. This is a lit art mag published by the students of Deitona High School in Deitona, Florida. Submission guidelines HERE. I love this:

 “Mission Statement: Howl is the vanguard of education in the publishing of the literary arts for the perennial generations. Our goals are to publish great literature from around the world, promote the literary arts in our own community, and all the while educate young writers and editors to carry the “lit” torch into the 21st century.”

EDINBURGH REVIEW is in the process of reviewing a backlog of submissions and moving their offices. The editors will announce their reopening of submission calls on their Facebook page and through their Twitter account. Follow and stay tuned.

AGNI is an American literary magazine that publishes poetry, fiction, essays, reviews, interviews, and artwork twice a year in print and biweekly online from its home at Boston University. Its editor is Sven Birkerts, the literary critic and essayist; its senior editor is William Pierce.”AGNI regularly features emerging writers and ‘among readers around the world . . . is known for publishing important new writers early in their careers, many of them translated into English for the first time” (PEN American Center). Most of what we publish is unsolicited. The print magazine appears twice yearly, in spring and fall. The website grows biweekly with postings of new online-only fiction, poetry, essays, reviews, and interviews. AGNI welcomes unsolicited manuscripts between September 1st and May 31st. Details HERE.

CALLALOO, A Journal of African Diaspora Arts and Letters “is a journal devoted to creative work by and critical studies of the work of African Americans and peoples of African descent throughout the African Diaspora. Visual art and studies of life and culture in the Black world are also published regularly in Callaloo, as is wide-ranging cultural criticism. Callaloo is published five times a year (Winter, Spring, Summer, Art, and Fall), and accepts original submissions of scholarly articles, book reviews, interviews, nonfiction essays, short fiction, poetry, and visual art.” Details HERE.

MOTHER JONES works mostly with writers with whom there is an established relationship but “will consider solidly reported, hard-hitting, groundbreaking news stories. We’re also open to thought-provoking, timely opinion and analysis pieces on important current issues.” Details HERE.

BENEATH CEASELESS SKIES, Literary Adventure Fantasy publishes “stories with a secondary-world setting and some traditional or classic fantasy feel, but written with a literary approach.” Word count limit: 14,000. Details HERE.

SEQUESTRUM “is a competitive, paying market which publishes high-quality short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual arts on a rolling basis. Recent contributors include Pulitzer Prize nominees, Guggenheim and NEA Fellows, award-winning novelists and poets, as well as many new and emerging voices. BAOBAB PRESS, Where good books are grown has an open call for submissions for an anthology of short fiction, This Side of the Divide, in which they plan to feature emerging and established authors exploring the Western United States. Length: 3,000 – 5,000 words. Payment if your story is selected for the anthology: $100 and a copy of the anthology. Deadline: October 31, 2017. Details HERE. This anthology is through a partnership of Baobab Press and University of Nevada, Reno MFA Program in Creative Writing.

Baobab Press also seeks submissions of creative non-fiction manuscripts (125 – 400 pages); novel manuscripts (125 – 400 pages); poetry manuscripts (40 – 100 pages); comics (50 – 100 pages); and short story collections (125-250 pages).  Details HERE.

CRANNÓG MAGAZINE has an open call for submissions for its upcoming issue. There’s a November deadline for the February 2018 issue. POETRY RESISTANCE WALL

100,000 Poets for Change (100TPC) founders, Michael Rothenberg and Terri Carrion, have “built” a Resistance Poetry Wall in response to calls from all over the world for a place to post poetry and art in reaction to January’s election here in the U.S.

You do not have to limit your poetry to the situation in the States. You can share work that is relative to your country or your specific concerns. As Michael and Terri state:

“The poetry and art posted on the WALL are not limited to the USA elections. There are many issues that concern us all and we welcome your contribution to this page.”

These efforts do have their place and power. So far 190 people have shared work on The Poetry Resistance Wall. I hope to see you there too. / Jamie

  • though your book or other product doesn’t have to be available through Amazon for review here, it should be easy for readers to find through your site or other venues.

Belated SUNDAY ANNOUNCEMENTS: Calls for Submissions, Contests, Events and Other News and Information

CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS

Opportunity Knocks

LUMINA LITERARY JOURNAL (Sarah Lawrence College) states that its mission “has always been to create a journal where the experimental and traditional are celebrated together, transforming into something innovative and exciting.” Submissions are open through November 5 for the next issue. The theme is “Resistance,” which the editors define as “resisting political powers, social norms, destructive impulses, negative influences, the desire to give up, or something else.” Prose, poetry and multimedia are of interest. Details HERE.

ELLIPSIS … LITERATURE AND ART is an annual publication sponsored by Westminster College and run by students. Poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, drama and art may be submitted for consideration. Publication is in April. Submission deadline is November 1 for everything but art.  Art submissions are open through February 1st. $10 per accepted poem. $50 for pose and cover art. Payment includes two copies.  Details HERE. 

EYE FLASH JOURNAL is another fledgling poetry publication. It is founded in England (south) and states a desire to showcase “the most striking contemporary poetry that will burn fresh images into the reader’s consciousness.” The first edition is schedule to come out in October and the plan is to publish two issues a year. They’re not on submittable yet so submission are by email. There’s not too much detail on their site but what there is can be found HERE.

ATEMISpoetry, the journal of Second Light Network of Women Poets deadline (reminder) for the November issue is coming up: August 31. They do not accept electronic submissions. If you have something ready and you live in London your submission might make the deadline. There’s also always the next issue that comes out in May 2018. Details HERE.

WALLOON WRITERS REVIEW “shares original creative writing and photography inspired by Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula …” The editors announce a call for their 2017 Volume 3 issue. 3,000 word limit and $5 submission fee “a portion of which is donated to area non profits that preserve the natural beauty of the region.”  Deadline: September 31, 2017. RIGGWELTER is a fledgling journal found this year by Manchester poet and playwright, Amy Kinsman. The first issue schedule to publish in September.  Submissions of poetry, short fiction, visual art and experimental media are welcome for consideration for future issues. Details HERE. riggwelter (verb) – a dialect word from the North of England. a sheep, having fallen onto its back, being unable to right itself is said to be riggweltered (e.g. bloody thing’s riggweltered again).

THE HAMILTON STONE REVIEW is a literary magazine published twice a year. Poetry submissions are currently open through September 17.  Details HERE.

FINGERS ON THE BUTTON “Is an ear movie, a podcast, a literary journal on tape? Let’s just call Fingers on the Button an audio Experience …” First season: early 2018. Opportunity for both voice actors and writers. Details for writers HERE.  Submission guidelines HERE.

POETS READING THE NEWS,  The World’s Only Newspaper Written by Poets is a digital publication “bridging poetry and journalism.”  Poems should be about a “time-sensitive news event.” Videos and audio submissions are encouraged. Submit via email. Details HERE.

2018 SONIA SANCHEZ-LANGSTON HUGHES POETRY CONTEST sponsored by Split This Rock. Deadline: November 1, 2017. Reading fee. Cash awards. Details HERE.

The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a non-profit, non-partisan 501(c)3 organization based in Santa Barbara, California, hosts two peace contests each year:

  1. THE 2018 Barbara Mandingo Kelly Peace Poetry Awards ” is an annual series of awards to encourage poets to explore and illuminate positive visions of peace and the human spirit. The Poetry Awards include three age categories: Adult, Youth 13-18, and Youth 12 & Under. The deadline for entries was July 1, 2018. Entry fees. Cash awards. Details HERE. The annual contest is open to people worldwide. Poems must be original, unpublished, and in English.
  2. The Swackhamer Disarmament Video Contest calls for contestants to submit short videos on an aspect of nuclear disarmament (the specific topic is announced on February 1 each year). The deadline for submissions is April 1. Details HERE

  • The 15th Annual Sarah Lawrence College Poetry Festival is scheduled for April 20 – 23, 2018. Details to come HERE.
  • 100,000 Poets for Change (100TPC) events happening globally on September 30, 2017.   • The Poet by Day Wednesday Writing Prompt (weekly) offers a suggestive – often inspirational – prompt and opportunity to be published. All work related to the prompt and submitted no later than the following Monday will be published on the following Tuesday.
  • A new and exciting issue of The BeZine is published every month on the 15th. Beginning January 2018, we’ll move to a quarterly publication schedule. Details to follow on this site as they are worked out.
