THE FLEXIBLE PERSONA,  a literary magazine, has a call out for its Spring 2017 issue. Interest is in fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry. The magazine is published twice a year and has specified reading periods. Submission guidelines HERE.

THE BeZINE, a publication of The Bardo Group Beguines will review submissions for the December issue, themed The Healing Power of the Arts, beginning on December 1.  Submit poetry, essay, nonfiction, creative nonfiction, photography, music videos and art or photography by December 10 to bardogroup@gmail.com.  Please review the publication first and the submission guidelines.

FICTION SILICON VALLEY accepts submission throughout the year and pays six cents a word with a max of $100. Categories are: “fantastic fiction” and “perfect poetry.” After the first submission there is a reading fee. Details HERE.

WOMEN’S DAY MAGAZINE recently updated their submission guidelines for the digital WomensDay.com. The editors want “long-form narrative pieces about inspiring women who’ve overcome adversity, emerging trends for mothers and women in general, and health issues that directly or indirectly affect women in middle age: weight loss, sleep, menopause, mental illness, fibromyalgia, asthma, headaches, allergies, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. While we realize they can be heavy topics, we always want our stories to have a positive takeaway and a hopeful angle.”  Guidelines for Digital Writers are HERE.

THE NEW SALON: READING AND CONVERSATION sponsored by the Poetry Society of America and Co-Sponsored by the NYU Creative Writing Program. Patrick Rosal reading, with Laurin Macios Patrick Rosal is the author of Brooklyn Antediluvian (Persea Books, 2016), Boneshepherds (Persea, 2011), My American Kundiman (Persea, 2006), and Uprock Headspin Scramble and Dive (Persea, 2003). His collections have been honored with the Association of Asian American Studies Book Award, the Global Filipino Literary Award, and the Asian American Writers Workshop Members’ Choice Award. In 2009, he had a Fulbright Fellowship to the Philippines. He teaches at Rutgers University-Camden and lives in Philadelphia. Admission is free. AMERICAN POETRY OLD AND NEW hosted by Ver Poets Programme at 8:00 p.m. – 10 p.m., Fri, 18 Nov 2016. THE PSA READING at McNally Jackson: Joshua Bennett and Jennifer Kronovet. Joshua Bennett received his PhD in English from Princeton University and is a member of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University. He has received fellowships from the Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop, the Hurston/Wright Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. His poems have been published or are forthcoming in Beloit Poetry Journal, Callaloo, Kenyon Review, New England Review, and elsewhere.
Jennifer Kronovet is the author of THE WUG TEST (Ecco Press), which was selected for the National Poetry Series. She is also the author of the poetry collection AWAYWARD. She co-translated THE ACROBAT, the selected poems of Yiddish writer Celia Dropkin. THE BAKERY  “is  an online literary journal that features a new poem every morning, publishing the work of emerging and established voices. The Bakery is interested in representing a wide range of voices and is open to all styles. Send poetry that we want to eat, that we want to put on a cake or between two slices of other poems. THE EMMA PRESS (charming!) has two calls-for-submissions open: One  is for poems about British and Irish kings and queens.  Tight deadline –  November 13 – but shared here on the odd chance that some reader has something ready to go. THE MARIE ALEXANDER POETRY SERIES , an imprint of White Pine Press (above), publishes one or two books a year – single author collections of “prose poetry, flash fiction, short lyric essays and hybrid forms.” Details HERE.

HEALING STORY ALLIANCE (HSA) “explores and promotes the use of storytelling in healing. Our goal as a special interest group of the National Storytelling Network (NSN) is to build a resource for the use of story in the healing arts and professions.

“We share experiences and skills to increase our own knowledge of stories and how best to use them to inform, nurture, inspire and heal, both organizations and individuals. We strive to reach beyond our storytelling community to engage all those in other service professions who can see the benefit of story as a vehicle for healing.”

Today RESCUE PRESS announced its fall line-up of books. This “is an independent publisher of chaotic and investigative work, founded in the winter of 2009. We publish work by activists, artists, craftsmen, list-makers, philosophers, poets, scientists, writers, and creative thinkers of all kinds. We’re interested in collections of artwork, comics, essays, experiments, how-tos, interrogations, manifestos, notes, poetry, stories, and anything else that transforms us.”  Rescue press reads submissions twice a year: Their first reading period is coming up – January – for book-length prose submissions. So, time enough for you to polish those manuscripts.  The second reading period – June –  is when poetry submissions are accepted for the Block Box Poetry Prize.

SARA MORGAN is a scenic carpenter, artist, and electrician by day and a poet by night, having been recently outted by her boss as a writer. She has performed her spoken word with InspiredWordNYC, Rimes of the Ancient Mariner, and ESTLastCall. She holds degrees in Anthropology, Linguistics, and African Studies from the University of Iowa and draws upon her love of and fascination with the culture, history, and tongues of the peoples of the world in her writing. Her writing is a mix of prose, poetry, and storytelling, and she hopes to use her newly discovered voice to affect social change. A native of Arkansas via Chicago, Iowa, and East Africa, Sara currently lives in Harlem.

RATTLE MAGAZINE says its mission is “to promote the practice of poetry.”  The full mission statement is HERE. Submission guidelines are HERE.  This month it sponsors an Ekphrastic Challenge. Deadline October 31. Details HEREIt extends an invitation to “Poets with Mental Illness” to submit poems for the Summer 2017 issue. The poems don’t have to be about mental illness. Deadline January 15, 2017. Details HERE.

THAT Literary Review, an annual online publication affiliated with Auburn University at Montgomery, recently debuted its first issue HERE.  The editors have extended an invitation to submit fiction and poetry. No deadline is indicated. Details HERE.

THE LITERARY REVIEW published by Fairleigh Dickinson University (Madison, New Jersey) has been closed to submissions but will open again for submission shortly.  Keep it on your radar.  Details HERE. It publishes essay, fiction, interviews and poetry.

THE AMERICAN LITERARY REVIEW, a publication of the creative writing program of the University of North Texas, publishes fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Nonfiction includes “essay, memoir, literary journalism and experimental nonfiction.”  Its reading period is from October 1 through May 1. A fee of $3 is charged “to cover administration and IT costs.” Details HERE.

HARPER’S MAGAZINE does not consider unsolicited poetry. However you may submit a query for fiction and nonfiction. They will consider submissions at any time from artists, illustrators and photographers. Details HERE.

KENYON REVIEW, one of American’s premier publications, has a reading period open through November 1st.
