“Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, a purple dusk over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgundy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries.” Jack Kerouac, On the Road

California ~
A tapestry
stitched from turquoise seas
and flaxen hills
threaded with
the twists and turns
of fault lines
and mad rivers,
redwood forests and
citrus groves
shot with yellow and orange
The skies are woven with
fuchsia at sunrise
At dusk ripe apricot
tumbles across raw umber earth
In Napa Valley
the geometry of vineyards
is neatly plotted

  1. Love this poem! California has always been my happy place. I feel like I’m home every time I visit. Some hilarious, special memories while there. Reading your poem left me lost in warm memories and smiling. Thank you. Beautiful photo too.

      1. In Landlocked PA. I used to live in San Jose and loved driving down to Monterrey and Santa Cruz on the weekends. I’ve run the Big Sur Marathon twice and am so in love with the coastline!

          1. Visiting PA is enjoyable although living here, at least for me especially coming after 2016, has been difficult. The farmland is lovely to look at though. Quite a different landscape than CA.
