ABYSS & APEX MAGAZINE publishes fiction, flash fiction, poetry and small press reviews.  Next fiction deadline is February 2019. The reading period for poetry opens this May. Details HERE.

NINTH LETTER accepts submissions of fiction, poetry and essays from September 1 – November 30 for its print edition. Details HERE. Ninth Letter is interested in submissions of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for a special online edition to be published at ninthletter.com in Winter 2018.  Submissions (poetry and short fiction or nonfiction) will be open from September 1 to November 5. SPLICKETY PUBLISHING GROUP “fills gaps in the modern reader’s day with concise, poignant fiction under 1,000 words. TIFERET (tiff-éh-ret), Fostering Peace Through Literature & Art is “a non-sectarian, non-dogmatic publication and community at the nexus of literature and spirituality.” The editors consider fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art and photography. SEQUESTRUM’S LITERARY JOURNAL 2018 Editor’s Reprint Award is $500 to writers of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Prose and poetry are judged separately, with a first-prize winner and a minimum of two runners-up per genre.  Deadline: April 30, 2018. Details HERE.

Poetry of Disability, Thursday, March 29, 5-7 p.m CDT Room 200A of the Library of Health Sciences – Chicago UIC, 1750 W.Polk Street, Chicago, Illinois 60612. “All experience levels are welcome to a discussion and creative writing workshop led by Poetry Foundation Library Coordinator Maggie Queeney. In March, we will read and discuss poetry of disability. A creative writing workshop, where participants will be guided through composing an original poem, concludes the session.”
  • POETRY OFF THE SHELF hosted by the Poetry Foundation & Poetry Magazine and featuring Jorie Graham on Thursday, March 29 from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. CDT at 61 W Superior St. Chicago Illinois.
  • JASON BAYANI IN LOCUS OF CONTROL hosted by the Poetry Center San José at Cafe Stritch, 374 S. 1st St. San Jose, California. Tickets HERE. Early purchase: $10. At the door: $15. Directed by award-winning performing artist, Kat Evasco, the show explores the lives of Filipino immigrants in America, taking you through Bayani’s hip-hop inspired youth, club-going college days, and turbulent adulthood. Locus of Control navigates his experience dealing with race, mental health, addiction, and his status as the first American-born child in his family. Utilizing poetry, storytelling, music, and multimedia, Bayani pieces together the different threads of his life while struggling to make sense of Walter Benjamin’s notion of redeeming the past in present time.

Jason Bayani is the author of Amulet (2013 Write Bloody Publishing). He’s an MFA graduate from Saint Mary’s College, a Kundiman fellow, and works as the Artistic Director for Kearny Street Workshop. Jason performs regularly around the country and recently debuted his solo theater show, “Locus of Control” in 2016. His second book, Locus, is forthcoming from Omnidawn Publishing in 2019.

CALLALOO,  a publication of John Hopkins University Press, “is the premier journal of literature, art, and culture of the African Diaspora, publishes original work by and about writers and visual artists of African descent worldwide,” welcomes submissions of fiction, poetry, critical articles, interviews, drama, and visual art.  This journal is published five times a year. Submission guidelines HERE.

COLUMBIA POETRY REVIEW accepts submissions during its reading period, July 1 – November 1 every year. Mark your calendar.  Submission fee $3.  Details HERE.

DRIFTWOOD PRESS publishes fiction, poetry, visual art, and craft essays and interview and welcomes “a wide variety of literary writing. We appreciate anything from stream of consciousness to minimalism, realism to absurdism, hybrid forms to experimental works, contemporary noir, or anything of literary merit.” Submissions fees. THE BeZINE, Be Inspired, Be Creative, Be Peace, Be. Submissions for the March issue – themed Peace are welcome through February 10 at 11:59 p.m. PST. You may choose to address the theme from the world peace perspective or from the inner peace perspective.

THE MASTERS REVIEW, A Platform for Emerging Writers‘ New Voices category “is open year round to any new or emerging author who has not published a work of fiction or narrative nonfiction of novel length. Authors with short story collections are free to submit.” Details HERE.

THE WALLACE STEVENS JOURNAL, a publication of Johns Hopkins University Press, “welcomes submissions on all aspects of Wallace Stevens’ poetry and life. Articles range from interpretive criticism of his poetry and essays to comparisons with other writers, from biographical and contextual studies to more theoretically informed reflections. Also welcome are previously unpublished primary or archival material and photographs, proposals for guest-edited special issues, as well as original Stevens-inspired artistic and creative works.” Details HERE.

GLIMMER TRAIN PRESS INC. announced it’s upcoming New Writer Award of the year this week. Deadline: 2/28. Cash award for first place is $2,500 and publication. This is open to emerging writers whose fiction has not appeared in any print publication with a circulation over 5,000. Most submissions run 1,000 – 4,000 words, but stories as long as 12,000 words are fine. NATIONAL BOOK FOUNDATION announced the National Book Award for Translated Literature. Submissions for the National Book Award for Translated Literature will open at the same time as submissions for all other categories, March 7. Details HERE.

FLASH FICTION MAGAZINE, Daily Flash Fiction Stories has an open call for submission, which are free or $30 for priority submissions “for those that desire in-depth feedback on their story.”  Stories length: 300-1,000 words. Submission details HERE.

GREEN LINDEN PRESS welcomes chapbook submission through March 20, 2018.  Reading fees, a portion of which along with book sales “support reforestation efforts.” Details HERE.

RAG QUEEN PERIODICAL a femme-centric publication is “looking for tender, gritty, and biting writing. FLORIDA LOQUAT FESTIVAL is seeking “one-page poetry or prose submissions for a reading held at Frances Avenue Park in New Port Richey, Florida on March 24, 2018. We welcome all styles and forms as long as loquats are the subject or central image. Submissions are open to all writers and not restricted to professional poets … [Submissions are encourage] from anyone who wishes to participate. There will be a prize packages awarded to first ($100), second ($50), and third place ($25) in both the professional and non-professional category, which will also include a t-shirt and other small complimentary favors such as loquat jam. Accepted submissions will be invited to read at the event in beautiful Frances Avenue Park and will be published in the annual chapbook, Leaves of Loquat, which will be presented in the fall during a public event. Lastly, any time remaining after the reading will be open to the public for an open mic where all ages and levels of experience are welcomed and encouraged to participate. Writers can submit up to three poems. CALIFRAGILE Poetry‘s editor, Wren Tuatha, says “in these times when the Earth and humanity seem so breakable, as if they might break each other, we search for answers in the air. COTTON XENOMORPH a newbie “journal produced with the mission to showcase new and ecstatic art” focused on social justice. Its editors categorize it as a “no creeps” publication … that is, no xenophobes, sexist, fat-shamers and the like … much the spirit of The BeZine. COFFIN BELL, a journal of dark literature – a quarterly – is getting ready to publish its second issue, April 1, themed monsters.  The editors seek poetry, flash fiction, short stories, and creative nonfiction “that explore dark themes” not necessarily traditional horror. The say, “Send us your political horrors, dark political thrillers, your waking nightmares. Details HERE.

CONFRONTATION literary magazine considers poetry, stories and nonfiction. Details HERE.

HARPER’S MAGAZINE does not accept unsolicited poetry but does consider fiction and nonfiction manuscripts, art, illustrations and photographs.  Details HERE.

OPEN JOURNAL OF ARTS AND LETTERS “has as its primary ambition to gather, publish, and popularize notable contemporary writing and other fine arts and to promote the work of its contributors to a varied and discerning audience in the English-speaking world and beyond.” Publishing interests are: flash fiction, creative nonfiction as essay or memoir, poetry.  Details HERE.

MUSE, a children’s magazine published by Carus Published (the publishers of Cricket) is published collaboratively with Smithsonian  for children ages 9 and over. It features science, history and the arts. They accept commissioned features only so you will have to query first for the themed issues. Details HERE.

THE BeZINE, Be Inspired, Be Creative, Be Peace, Be. Submissions for the March issue – themed Peace – closes on February 10 at 11:59 p.m. PST .

New rules: Please send text in the body of the email not as an attachment. Send photographs or illustrations as attachments. No google docs or Dropbox or other such. No rich text. Send submissions to bardogroup@gmail.com.

Publication is March 15th. Poetry, essays, fiction and creative nonfiction, art and photography, music (videos or essays), and whatever lends itself to online presentation is welcome for consideration.  No demographic restrictions.

Please read at least one issue and the Intro/Mission Statement and Submission Guidelines. We DO NOT publish anything that promotes hate, divisiveness or violence or that is scornful or in any way dismissive of “other” peoples.

The BeZine will be published on quarterly schedule in 2018 and for the foreseeable future:

  • March 2018 issue, Deadline February 10th. Theme: Peace.
  • June 2018 issue, Deadline May 10th. Theme: Sustainability
  • September 2018 issue, Deadline August 10th, Theme: Human Rights/Social Justice
  • December 2018 issue, Deadline November 10th, Theme: A Life of the Spirit

The BeZine is an entirely volunteer effort, a mission. It is not a paying market but neither does it charge submission or subscription fees.

Previously published work may be submitted if you hold the copyright. Submissions from beginning and emerging artists as well as pro are encouraged and we have a special interest in getting more submissions of short stores, feature articles, music videos and art.

CONTESTS

NATIONAL POETRY SERIES open competition guidelines  seeks book-length poetry by U.S. citizens living in the States or abroad. Submission fee $30. Competition closes on February 28, 2018.  Details HERE. 

PAZ PRIZE FOR POETY awards one $2,000 prize every year – the even years – for “the publication of a previously unpublished book of poetry originally written in Spanish by an American resident. The 2018 prize will open on May 1 2018 and run though June 15, 2018.  Details HERE.

THE CAROLYN FORCHÉ PRIZE FOR HUMANITARIAN POETRY is $1,000 and publication. The prize “is awarded for a poem on the theme of improving people’s lives or reducing suffering, especially widespread suffering. Examples of humanitarian poetry include poems about refugees, humanitarian aid, escape, rescue, war and conflict.”  The  winner and ten finalists will be published in the upcoming 2018-2019 anthology, Elusions: Refugee Poems, to be published by WaterWood Press. Submissions begin March 15, 2018, and close August 15, 2018. $10 submission fee. Details HERE.

THE 2018 INGRID JONKER PRIZE FOR ENGLISH POETRY has an open a call for submissions. Publishers or self-published poets are invited to submit three copies of any English poetry debut published in 2016 or 2017 for adjudication to:

The Ingrid Jonker Prize is awarded in alternate years to the best debut collections in English or Afrikaans.  The winner receives a cash prize dependant on the interest accumulated in an account originally established for this purpose.

In 2016 the Ingrid Jonker prize for a debut collection of poetry in English was awarded to Thabo Jijana for Failing Maths and My Other Crimes (uHlanga Press)

The closing date for submissions is Wednesday 31 January 2018. Entries should be accompanied by a cover letter with the contact details of the publisher and poet, as well as a declaration that the submission is the poet’s first collection of poetry published with an ISBN.

  • nothing that foments hate or misunderstanding
  • nothing violent or encouraging of violence
  • English only, though Spanish is okay if accompanied by translation
  • your book or other product  should be easy for readers to find through your site or other venues.
